Second external monitor does not appear in laptop Display choices

Post by mstannh »

I have an ACER laptop with Linux Mint
I want to close the laptop lid and use 2 external displays.
When I select the display settings, I see the laptop screen and 1 external display.
Even though I have both external monitors attached (1 in HDMI port and 1 with an HDMI to USB adapter) a second external monitor is not detected.

When directly attached to the laptop's on board HDMI port, either external display works, but only 1 external display in addition to the laptop display is detected with the lid closed.
I also tried an HDMI splitter from the main laptop HDMI port. The signal is pushed to mirror both external monitors however only 1 external display is detected in the display settings along with laptop display (which is closed).
I have reviewed other related posts but have had no success.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to the forum, mstannh.

Have you checked the Acer documentation to verify your model supports the setup you want to use? Not all USB-C ports support video.

Also, with an 8th-gen Intel CPU, I recommend using a newer kernel.

Instructions for upgrading to the 5.15 kernel:
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 5.15 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.
