[SOLVED] PC gets stuck in Suspend Mode- won't wake -- AMD GPU

Post by Cornelius »

I recently built a new PC. I'm pretty new to this stuff, but I got it running and installed linux Mint 21.1 Vera.

I soon noticed that when my PC automatically went to suspend mode after a period of inactivity, I could not wake it up again. I had to force-quit by holding the power button.

I'm a little stumped on how to fix this. I'm pretty sure my drivers are all up to date, and visible by the system.

GPU: Gigabyte AMD Radeon 6600 XT
CPU: Intel 12th Gen Core i5-12400
Kernel: 5.15.0-58 generic
Base: Ubuntu 22.04 Jammy
Motherboard: Gigabyte B660M Gaming X AX DDR4
Monitor: Asus VG27A (G-Sync)

Is the fact that it's a G-Sync monitor mixed with an AMD GPU messing things up?
Is there anything in the BIOS I can modify so that I can move the mouse or touch the keyboard to wake the PC from suspend?
Should I try updating the Kernel?

Thank you :)

Please post your output so we can verify that. Give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code tags and paste the results of the command between the code tags
Results
. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.

Have you tried using a different port on the GPU to see if there is a difference?

I have tried using a different GPU display port and I don't think that's the cause. But I will try again to make sure! Below is the output from <inxi -Fxxxrz>

I meant if you are using a DP port, can you try an HDMI port?

I found a bug RX 6600 XT fails to resume from suspend in 5.15.y series. I do see where someone said switching to an HDMI cable (instead of DP) fixed the issue for them. I also see mention of people indicating they were not having a problem with the 6.0 kernel. You can install the latest 6.0-oem kernel with

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install linux-oem-22.04b
and reboot.

Let us know if either of those suggestions work.

Hi SMG, that appears to have worked! I updated the kernel, rebooted, and then placed the PC into suspend. I was able to wake it up, so it looks like it's working!

a few questions though:

-I was not able to wake it up simply by just moving the mouse or typing on the keyboard. Is there a way to change something in my system settings or BIOS to allow for my keyboard or mouse to wake the PC from suspend?

-secondly, if for any reason I notice bugs with the 6.0 kernel.... how can I revert back to the previous kernel?

-and lastly.... do you think that by using a G-Sync monitor that I'm using right now, that it will have combatibility issues with my AMD video card? Should I switch to a Free Sync?

Thank you for your help! Looks like the major issue has been solved.

To boot into an older kernel, bring up the grub menu, select the Advanced Options, and then select the desired kernel. If you do not normally see the grub menu, repeatedly tap the escape key during boot to bring up the grub menu for your UEFI boot computer.

See this post for how to edit grub to get the menu to show if you are having issues using the Escape key. (Some computers are very fast and getting the timing right with regards to hitting the escape at the proper time can be tricky.)

Once you boot with the older kernel, you will want to remove the newer one because Mint automatically boots into the highest number kernel. You can remove the newer kernel using Update Manager. Open Update Manager. Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue. Click 6.0 on the left panel. Click the installed kernel in the right panel to make the "Remove" button visible.

I would think that would depend on your hardware. If your items are bluetooth, bluetooth is possibly put to sleep during suspend.

Gigabyte usually has good documentation available. Here is the BIOS Setup Guide for the 600 Series. I see on page 26 there is a setting for having usb ports enabled at different times in the boot process.

If you are not able to find an answer, please create a new topic in the Hardware Forum because this is not a graphics issues.

I'm sorry, but I do not understand your question. In what respect would not you have compatiblity?

Thanks again for all of your help with this issue. I appreciate your thorough responses tremendously. If I am unable to figure out a solution from Gigabyte's BIOS setup guide that you provided, I will be sure to post a different question in the hardware section.

I think my question about G-Sync vs Free sync is not super critical, so I don't want to take up more of your time! My understanding is that Freesync and G-sync are types of GPU software that are mostly used for gamers and high FPS users... and I don't think that I'll be pushing those boundaries too much so I'm not super concerned! I was just wondering if by me using a G-Sync monitor, with a Freesync GPU (AMD Radeon) if there might be some issues with that.... but after your help with this issue I don't think that the Freesync/G-sync conflict is causing the problem.

Thank you!!

I would not think there is a conflict. I am actually not sure how well the Linux drivers for the GPU can (or can not) take advantage of those capabilities. I don't usually help with that specific level of detail with monitors, but maybe someone else will know and chime in.
