[ABANDONDED] Mint 21.1 Dual Monitor with different resolutions and aspect ratios issue

Post by knotts789 »

Hello,
I am having this issue with my dual monitor. My laptop screen is 2560 by 1600 (14"), and external monitor 1920 by 1080 (~22"). If I set the scale of the monitors to anything other than 100%, the external monitor will scale in a weird way where part of the image will go out of the screen. Since using 1440p at 100% scale is a bit too small, I set it to 1080p, and now it is usable, but it would be nice to be able to use my screen at its normal resolution.
There are some other posts about similar issues, but it doesn't really solve my issue. I appreciate any help.

Welcome to the forum, knotts789.

Could you please supply the output of

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxrz
It appears you have installed the driver from the AMD website instead of just using a newer kernel (which your system should really be using). Without the additional information provided by the command I requested, we do not know your GPU or quite a bit of other pertinent information. For what reason did you use the driver from the AMD website?

Hi,
I was using the newer kernel, but it got a bit buggy, when I posted this the question I had gone back to 5.15. But it seems I forgot to remove 5.19, so I'm normally running 5.19. Sorry, for the confusion. Though, it doesn't solve my problem with the external display. For the AMD drivers from the website, I'm not sure but I think Mint 21 (which updated from) didn't have the driver (or the driver didn't have the functionality to which between integrated and discreet gpus?), which is why I downloaded them from the website. Is it better to have the default drivers?

No, I meant newer as in 6.0-oem or 6.1-oem kernels. Your 6000 series CPU needs a 6 series kernel as indicated in the Tips for Troubleshooting Graphics Issues (including external monitors not working) which is pinned to the top of the Graphics Cards & Monitors forum. (I will move your topic to that forum after I post this.)

However, the drivers from AMD's website do not work with OEM kernels (which are the only 6 series kernels currently available for Linux Mint) so you would want to uninstall the website drivers (using the directions from the website) before installing an OEM kernel.

Unless you need the pro portion of the driver, there is no need to be downloading the AMD driver from their website. The non-pro portion is the same as what you get in the kernel. If you need the OpenCL portion (which is part of the pro portion), then do not install the OEM kernels.

There have been quite a few AMD-AMD laptops with freeze issues when having an external monitor attached. What is needed depending on the BIOS/UEFI, the type of connection (problems seemed to happen more often with HDMI ports) and whether or not DRI_PRIME=1 environment variable was used.

Let us know whether you need OpenCL. If so, then I suggest trying the DRI_PRIME=1 environment variable with the 5.19 kernel (or maybe even a mainline 6.0 series kernel).

If you don't need OpenCL, then I recommend removing the drivers from the AMD website and installing the 6.1-oem kernel with

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install linux-oem-22.04c
and using the DRI_PRIME=1 environment variable.

If the environment variable helps, I can give you information on making it more permanent. (It normally only lasts for the current session.)

Hello, thanks again for your reply. I tried to uninstall the drivers from the website: https://amdgpu-install.readthedocs.io/e ... dgpu-stack with the commands from here and I do not have the amdgpu-install and uninstall commands in the terminal anymore. But, inxi output seems the same to me (though really dont know how it is supposed to look like).

So, I did try to install 6.1 with your command but I got a black screen with the mouse visible after login.
I tried 6.0 and it boots normally, but I have the same issue.

Here is my current inxi -Fxxxrz:

It seems to me that I'm missing firmware for amdgpu and I saw in Tips for Troubleshooting Graphics Issues that for If you have an AMD RX 7900 XTX or an AMD RX 7900 XT there are some instruction to install the firmware, but since this is not the GPU I have I am sure if I should try to install them.
I also have the feeling I didnt manage to uninstall the driver from the website properly which I think is why 6.1 is not working. But if that is the case I am not sure how to uninstall them properly, I did as instructed in the website and there is not more information about it:

Code: Select all

 $ amdgpu-uninstall
# or the following is also equivalent:
$ amdgpu-install --uninstall
# For Ubuntu:
$ sudo apt-get purge amdgpu-install
Again thanks a lot for the help...

knotts789 wrote: Tue Feb 07, 2023 5:02 pmSo, I did try to install 6.1 with your command but I got a black screen with the mouse visible after login.
The desktop didn't load on either screen? Or was the screen just so big that you could not see the panel at the bottom?

I didn't see any errors in the output you posted so I'm not sure what happened.
knotts789 wrote: Tue Feb 07, 2023 5:02 pmI tried 6.0 and it boots normally, but I have the same issue.
Okay.

I don't know if any of the missing firmware applies to your GPUs or if there is newer firmware available than what you currently have which might help.

The firmware mentioned in the Tips topic is the absolute minimum needed to get graphics on the screen for that GPU. You have graphics. We could see if newer firmware helps if you want to try it. I suggest taking a Timeshift snapshot first and then installing the newest package which is from January. (Timeshift will be the only way to remove the firmware unless you want to completely re-install Linux Mint.)
  • Please go to index : kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git and download the latest firmware package linux-firmware-20230117.tar.gz into your Downloads directory.
  • Right-click the downloaded file and select "Extract here". That will create a directory named linux-firmware-20230117.
  • Open that directory in your file manager. In that directory, open a terminal and run the following lines one at a time.

    Code: Select all

    sudo cp -R * /lib/firmware/
    sudo update-initramfs -u -k all
  • Reboot the computer.

The output you posted from the 6.0 kernel looks like it was removed. These ROG Zephyrus's always seem to be finicky about working on Linux-based distros, especially when they are new.

Let's see if the firmware helps.

Hi, thanks for the help but I kind of gave up on it and changed distro.
Fedora doesn't have this issue :D Should I mark it as solved?

You can mark it as [ABANDONDED] so others know you are no longer seeking help on the issue.
