Current AMD Driver for Radeon RX570

Post by JTJersey »

So I downloaded the latest driver (as of December 2022) from AMD for my AMD Radeon RX570 graphics card. Currently System Information reports the driver only as "amdgpu". Driver Manager always reports "No drivers needed" when I check it, but I randomly will get artifacts from some windows I open that I have to click on to make go away, then reopen the window I wanted. Don't know if moving to this driver will help with anything or not. Think it's worth the risk? If I launch it from a thumb drive via Driver Manager will it tell me if anythings wrong with it? The driver I downloaded is named "amdgpu-install_5.4.50401-1_all.deb".

Generally downloading the newest driver from the mfr's site is a bit too risky. Not recommended in Linux, that's a Windows habit.

amdgpu is in the Linux kernel, you wouldn't see it in Driver Manager. DM is not what many new users think it is, it's not really that comprehensive.

There's no way anyone can make meaninigful recommendations without a lot more system info. Copy/paste the text output of inxi -Fxxxrz run in the terminal.

Is this happening only with certain applications or is it happening with everything?

Do the problems go away if you use a different compositor (something other than Compiz)?

Here is the system information so others do not have to download it.

When it happens it's usually when opening or closing the main menu or Firefox.

I haven't run anything but Compiz for so long I can't honestly say how a different compositor behaves. It would require using Marco or such for an extended period of time and that's so boring I can usually only put up with it for a few hours. :)

Compiz is well known to be a bugfest, I would not touch it myself.

That is what is should report. That is the driver for that GPU. That is the same driver you get from the AMD website.

If you want to a newer driver, you can use a newer kernel. The 5.19 kernel is available in Update Manager. If you want to try it and need directions, just let us know.
JTJersey wrote: Fri Feb 03, 2023 9:56 am Driver Manager always reports "No drivers needed"
Driver Manager is only for proprietary drivers. AMD drivers are in the kernel so they are never in Driver Manager.

That GPU has been available for a long time and I don't recall others having this type of issue with it. That is why I mentioned the compositor because I don't see others using it.

That sounds rather random. Is the issue random?

Yes, seems to start after about 3 or 4 days of use. As far as Compiz I will continue to use it. Compiz is fine if you don't go in and start turning on a bunch of features that you don't know what they do, then you can definitely run into to trouble. If this is something caused by Compiz it's a minor nuisance.

That sounds more like a memory/swap-related issue. A problem with a graphics driver does not wait 3-4 days to manifest.

Artifacting is usually a problem with the memory on the card. If too much heat builds up for a few days that could be the issue.

Interesting, I have plenty of airflow in the box, but maybe I'll let MemTest86 run overnight after I close. See if anything shows up.

I think rene meant the memory on the GPU card that only the GPU uses. That is separate from the memory chips your computer uses for regular computing.

Yes, absolutely. And yes, memtest won't test that.

Oops, missed that. Your right. Maybe I'll up the fan speed on the GPU and see if there's any benefit.
