[Solved] Second monitor not working (Nvidia Graphics Card)

Post by 4stronaute »

Hello!

I'm new to Linux and I've tried to solve my issue following lots of posts related to my problem (especially the "Tips for Troubleshooting" posted by the kind SMG), but none of them worked. I appreciate if you could help me.

Currently, I'm using the "nvidia-driver-525", which is marked as "recommended" on my drivers manager. I found out that my second monitor works with the "xserver-xorg-video-nouveau", but it doesn't work after my computer sleeps, and because I've seen SMG recommending the usage of the proprietary driver, I've been trying to make everything work fine with that one.

Welcome to the forum, 4stronaute.

The open-source driver does have problems resuming from sleep with certain GPUs.

The output indicates the Nvidia driver is not loaded (N/A).

It also appears you may have created a custom xorg.conf file? What is the output of

Code: Select all

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
You will also likely need to switch to On-Demand mode in the nvidia-prime-applet, but I'm not sure how that "alternate" driver appeared so please also provide the output of

Code: Select all

dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia
and

Code: Select all

mokutil --sb-state

Hey, SMG! Thank you for the quick response.

Yes, I created a xorg.conf file a few weeks ago, trying to solve the problem following someone else's instructions, but it didn't work. The output of

Code: Select all

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia.conf
is:

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
        Identifier "Nvidia Card"
        Driver "nvidia"
        VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
        BoardName "GeForce GTX 1650"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Device0"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
    Option "metamodes" "nvidia-auto-select +0+0 {ForceFullCompositionPipeline=On}"
    Option "AllowIndirectGLXProtocol" "off"
    Option "TripleBuffer" "on"
EndSection
I had already switched to "On-Demand" mode on the "Nvidia Settings" applet (tried to attach a printscreen of it), but nothing happened unfortunately.

And the result of

Code: Select all

mokutil --sb-state
is

Code: Select all

SecureBoot enabled
Please, let me know if I did something wrong.

That file indicates you only have an Nvidia GPU which is not correct. Your system has both AMD and Nvidia graphics. Please delete the file.

Code: Select all

sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
4stronaute wrote: Mon Feb 06, 2023 12:50 pmI had already switched to "On-Demand" mode on the "Nvidia Settings" applet (tried to attach a printscreen of it), but nothing happened unfortunately.
That's because the Nvidia driver is not loaded.

Did your computer at any point after installing the Nvidia driver pop up a screen when you booted asking you for a password to set up MOK?

Because you have secure boot enabled, your computer's hardware does not trust the Nvidia driver and will not load it. You have to specifically tell it to trust the driver by setting up the password/MOK. Or you can go to the BIOS/UEFI and disable secure boot. Your choice as to which you prefer.

Please also supply the output of

Code: Select all

dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia
so we can make sure it looks like the proper driver files are installed.

I deleted the xorg.conf file successfully.
SMG wrote: Mon Feb 06, 2023 12:58 pm Did your computer at any point after installing the Nvidia driver pop up a screen when you booted asking you for a password to set up MOK?
Yes, the driver manager asked me for a password after it installed the proprietary driver (attached a printscreen of the pop up that asked me that), and when I rebooted, a blue screen with some options appeared ("continue boot", "enroll mok" etc.). I selected "enroll mok", followed some steps, wrote my password and now my second monitor is working, but only when I mirror the screens. That is, my system recognize the second monitor (attached a printscreen of the monitor graphic app), but when I try to join screens, the second one stays black. I didn't turned secure boot off.

We are making progress. I do not think secure boot is the problem related to the screen staying black.

Try switching to Performance mode using the nvidia-prime-applet. The applet is in your panel. I'm wondering if the applet shows something different than the screenshots you are posting of the Nvidia X Server settings app.

Before switching to "performance mode" on the nvidia-prime-applet, I let my computer sleep and when I came back and woke it up, the second monitor started working even with the "On-Demand" option. Then I turned my computer off and on and it started with the second monitor all black. I suspended the computer, now arbitrarily, and when I woke it up, the second monitor started working (weird, isn't it? I would have to suspend it every time I turned my computer on).

I switched to the "performance mode" and now it is working correctly, although it set the second monitor as primary when I did it, so I had to configure to make my first monitor the first one again.

You're right! The applet shows more options now. I'll attach a print of it.

Now I'm wondering if the performance mode will spend more energy of my laptop. For example, if I need to use it on battery, will it drain my battery out quickly?

Yes, it will.
SMG wrote: Mon Feb 06, 2023 4:07 pmYou're right! The applet shows more options now. I'll attach a print of it.
You should be able to set the nvidia-prime-applet to just AMD mode. Does the applet show you that mode as possible when you click on the applet? The below is an example of a computer with Intel, but yours should say AMD instead of Intel.

If you are using your computer without the external monitor, then you would want to use AMD mode to use the least amount of battery. The screenshots you have posted seem to indicate you can not switch to AMD mode.
4stronaute wrote: Mon Feb 06, 2023 4:34 pm Before switching to "performance mode" on the nvidia-prime-applet, I let my computer sleep and when I came back and woke it up, the second monitor started working even with the "On-Demand" option. Then I turned my computer off and on and it started with the second monitor all black. I suspended the computer, now arbitrarily, and when I woke it up, the second monitor started working (weird, isn't it? I would have to suspend it every time I turned my computer on).
That sounds sort of like it might be a monitor connection issue.

Yes, it shows the "AMD (Power Saving Mode)" option (I'll attach a print of all the options, although my system is in Portuguese), but it makes my second monitor stop working. Does it turn my graphics card off?

Got it, thank you for that.

As you can see on the screenshot I attached now, I can switch to AMD mode, I just can't do it using the "NVIDIA Settings" app, only using the Nvidia applet.

I'm not sure about that, once it works fine on performance mode or Windows. When I switch to the "On-Demand" option, my second screen goes black, even though it works (the system detects it and some apps open on it, despite that I can't see anything).

Switch back to Performance mode. Then try using the command sudo prime-select on-demand to switch modes.

Your computer has two GPUs. One is the onboard AMD GPU and the other is the discrete Nvidia GPU. When you use AMD (Power Saving Mode), the system will only load the AMD drivers so the Nvidia GPU is not using power.

In AMD (Power Saving Mode) you are using only the onboard AMD GPU. Your computer has the external ports wired only to the Nvidia GPU so external monitors will not work in AMD Power Saving mode because the Nvidia GPU drivers are not loaded or used in that mode.

The nvidia-prime-applet is not Nvidia code which is why you do not see the AMD mode in the Nvidia Settings app.

The nvidia-prime-applet is Linux Mint code and gives you the ability to switch to AMD mode. I wanted to make sure you knew about the AMD Power-save mode.

I'll have to think some more about what might be happening.

Unfortunately, it didn't work, but thank you for your response. However, I found out the

Code: Select all

xset dpms force suspend
command, which quickly suspends my system and when I hit a keyboard key, it lights up my second monitor (so that it works properly), plus it lights up the first one too, of course.

Thank you for all the explanations, SMG.

Have you tried an older driver yet? Try the Nivida-470.

I hadn't tried it! I tried and now everything works fine with the Nivida-470, and that issue of my second monitor not lighting up when I start my computer disappeared!

Can you tell me if there is a problem with using an older driver?

That is good news. It seems like some of the older GPUs tend to have more issues with the newer drivers. We've seen a number of people have problems disappear when using the Nivdia-470.

That driver is still receiving security updates so unless there is some feature in the newer drivers that you need (or a bug you experience which is fixed with a newer driver), you can use this one.

Thank you so much, SMG, for all your responses and patience.

I tried to solve this problem for a long time and only with your help it was fully resolved.

I'm very happy to be migrating to Linux and I hope I can solve all the problems that appear along the way, as I'm really enjoying the experience!

Thank you one more time! I wish you all the best!
