ati detection, drivers, 3d effects

Post by buster » Tue Jan 02, 2007 9:57 am

I guess this is sort of a bug report in advance. :D My older machine has no 3d acceleration with Mint, though it does with many other distros. (I must add that TuxRacer (ppracer) works perfectly with the LiveCD on my wife's newer computer that has on-board video and sound.) It's definitely the rage 128 drivers needed for my older machine.

Also, since it's an older machine, I'd like to be able to have 3d acceleration for games, but not the 3d desktop effects if that's possible.

Looking forward to the next Mint.

Downloaded and tried the Ubuntu Edgy. Same thing - ppracer works on my wife's machine (where I can't install Mint  ) but it does NOT work on my older machine with the ATI rage 128 card.

Oddly enough, the very latest Mepis, which uses repositories from Ubuntu, has a fully functioning ppracer on my older machine. Not sure what Warren does. But I have to go all the way back to Breezy to get my 3D to work properly with Ubuntu.

Not suggesting it should or can be fixed. Just pointing out my disappointment.
