[SOLVED] SLI configuration for NVIDIA fails to activate

Post by N1X3L »

Hello all, first time poster, recently avid reader, and total Linux newbie here. I'm having a very difficult time activating SLI. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions that could aid me.

  • A final possibly relevant piece of information is that the “Additional Drivers” reports my NVIDIA driver as activated but not currently in use. However, I've read that's a common problem, so perhaps a non‒issue?
I believe I've included all the relevant information to request guru insight, but please let me know if I should post anything else. Thank you in advance for any assistance you are able to offer — it is both valued and appreciated.

Hi,

I don't run mint yet, but Gnome and many associated packages just ignored the multi-gpu features of OpenGL

check what kernel driver you are using:
lspci -nn -k -d 10de:
(the colon is part of the command)

for the entry that says VGA compatible controller you want:
Kernel driver in use: nvidia
and maybe:
Kernel modules: nvidia_current, nouveau, nvidiafb
nouveau or nv on that first line won't work with multi-gpu as far as i know
if you have that right, the computer should boot and show linux output on one of your screens

Second is what driver X is loading. You are not providing that in your excerpt.
grep -i nvidia /var/log/Xorg.0.log
will figure it out. I use 11.10 and have:

NVIDIA dlloader X Driver 280.13

higher is better, pretty much.

grep -E '(EE|WW)' /var/log/Xorg.0.log
lists bad stuff when starting X

If you are having trouble but the driver is loading, put some easy settings nvidia-xconfig and verify that you get video on all monitors.
If that's ok, the linux distro might not be able to manage multiple gpus. Sounds unbelievable but is in fact the state of affairs.

Xfce works, gnome classic kind of works, anything after that is broken

Please correct me if I am wrong about any of this, but the output from lspci -nn -k -d 10de: looks okay to me.

However, the output from grep -i nvidia /var/log/Xorg.0.log shows I am only using "NVIDIA dlloader X Driver 270.41.06". I checked, and the newer "NVIDIA dlloader X Driver 290.10" has been released. Is my best next step to manually update to NVIDIA 290.10, since the Additional Drivers application is not recognizing it? Thank you again!

So I elected to act impetuously, and did manually install the new NVIDIA 290.10 driver. Lo and behold, it worked! SLI is now functioning perfectly! Here's a copy of my newly updated xorg.conf, in case it is helpful to anyone.
