Ignoring this issue: Sudden strange behavior

Post by mintyfresh2 »

[EDIT]
Going with a fresh upgrade to Mint20 this weekend.
[/ EDIT]

Hi again all, I'm back with something odd...
Was idle using a native program (doesn't matter which) when all of a sudden, I see the task bar
opening a program to the tune of approx 100 instances. I deleted the 100, I shut down, and rebooted
on reboot, it's as if I never deleted the copies I delete then once again. OK.... it doesn't happen again,
for a day or two. This time I think perhaps a key is stuck.. Nope no keys stuck. I unplug the keyboard after deleting the next 100 instances.... Again without the keyboard it repeats the anomaly.. and after the second deletion it stops.....

NEXT...........
Update manager says I have some updates,,, and I attempt to Install them the machine goes thru all the motions, and instead of the normal Update confirmation, I get:

Code: Select all

Errors were encountered while processing:
 nscd
I then look to see the last two kernel upgrades have not been installed. I am usually pretty adept at installing upgrades, and this puzzles me... because I see the active kernel is 5.3.0-62
I see the latest kernel installed is 5.4.0-40
I also have gotten the upgrade to mint 2020. that is not yet installed due to the above <nscd> return

I ran the F-inixi(sp??) report which returns

Actually, it may very well matter which one. What was it? Just the one?

ANd there's not much ssystem info there, post the text output of inxi -Fxz from the terminal. For users of older h/w the latest kernel may not be the one you want.

Hello, Hoser Rob,
and thank you for the reply.

I have decided not to pay attention to these anomalies, due to the fact that since I upgraded to 19.3,
the machine is running much slower, than either 17.x or 18.x
Now that 20.x is available, I am going to do a fresh install on a new Drive.
I've already backed up all of my data to the cloud, and will have only the OS on /dev/sda and the home directory on /dev/sdb
If this doesn't cure the slowness, (for instance It can take up to 20 seconds to open Kolourpaint,
6 seconds for a print screen to open to the save as function. and a reboot takes up to 7 minutes.)
I'll try a lite version, then a new PC, in that order.

[cite] Topology: Dual Core model: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ bits: 64 type: MCP [/cite]
Your hardware is quite old, you should try an older Kernel or a distro more adaquate for old hardware (sorry) like Debian, MX Linux or AntiX, and if that all still fails, try Puppy, or Rety debian with lighter DEs/Window Managers.

[cite] The native program the first day was Calculator, on another day it was Terminal.[/cite]
It's a MATE issue, can you try with XFCE/Cinnamon editions of Mint? The problem persisted?

Hi Allanherrera,
WELL, I'm old too... three quarters of a century old! My last birthday, 7 months ago.
...the heart is on it's 4th bypass The feet suffer from Mortons Neuroma, and Plantar Fasciitis
the lower legs have venous insufficiency. The teeth are a modern Plastic,
But,I've already outlived my school friends..and one wife.
And I still do heavy construction work, I'm taking a Film scoring class,
and another class using Unix. and,.... I'm in the process of building my own
music recording studio, single handedly.
Having just updated my Kernel a few weeks before, I now know the issue isn't with hardware.

This Past week, I upgraded the Kernel once more.and am running with kernel 5.4.0-42
On top of that, I just upgraded my "Old" hardware with LM2020, and it seems to be working :
a, much faster
b, a lot smoother,
c, the issue is gone.
The old wisdom was right to ignore it, and just do the upgrade.
But thank you for your comments
