To elaborate on what Sundayrefugee said, the Debian Edition ALPHA 023, as its name implies, was based on pure Debian (the Testing branch) while Linux Mint proper is based on Ubuntu Linux (which itself is based on Debian Testing but with enough deviations sufficient to term it a fork.) Many people in the Linux Mint community are interested in producing a Linux Mint Debian Edition, but we seem to lack the cohesion necessary to elect a strong leader, form a cohesive team and network of testers required to pull it off. If you are interested in an easy-to-use Linux distribution that's similar in look and feel to Ubuntu or Linux Mint, but based on Debian Testing then I highly recommend Parsix Linux (or Dream Linux if you prefer the Stable branch of Debian.)
