Hardware recognition differences by Mate and Xcfe

Post by OldGuy69 » Tue May 24, 2016 8:36 pm

I use Mate on a Compaq c500 (old) and I have Xcfe as a second DE. Under Mate the computer won't recognize a Sansa mp3 player when plugged into the USB port. Using Xcfe, it recognizes the player and the memory as two icons and I can load and delete audio files on the device. Why do two DE's handle hardware so differently?

This would seem to imply that your Sansa (which type? My old Sansa ZIP is a USB device) is or is setup to be handled as an MTP rather than USB-storage device. The latter would be handled by the kernel, the former by the GVFS userspace virtual file system layer, and MATE might make options available as to how device insertion is handled. Anything of use in the file-manager's media options?

ALso, installing multiple DEs is not a good idea. You often get conflicts that cause problems and they aren't easy to fix.
