Server or desktop

Post by DC80 »

Hi all,

I have a non technical question about the desktop and / or server. Right now I have this setup:

Ubuntu server 16.04 with https and owncloud in dual boot with windows 10

In windows 10 I play only games so nothing big going on there. But then the ubuntu server. I would like to work once and a while without using a laptop or my phone.

The question is if i should convert it into a desktop.

Option 1: Ubuntu server 16.04 with https and owncloud
Option 2: Linux mint desktop with https and owncloud
Option 3: Linux mint desktop with virtualbox and ubuntu server

I know that option 1 is the safest but i am not a company or something so are there any other options?

Thanks in advance!

I disagree here. Windows very much deciding your choices is a "BIG GOING ON".
Servers traditionally don't have desktops.

Are you're asking if you should put a GUI on the Ubuntu Server?
Coz if you are, my answer is Hell No.

If Windows wasn't installed, what would you do?
And you certainly don't need a "server" labeled distro. You can run owncloud from your wifi-enabled toaster.
I run it a lot. Some even on "servers".

I only play LOL (League Of Legends) on windows and have contact with a friend during these games since we play together. Things like e-mail and such I check on my mobile during the windows sessions.

No, i know this not a good practice so I don't put a desktop on a server. That is why I asking, if it is much risk and if so then i would like to know if a desktop is safe enough and/or virtualbox is applying more security while using a desktop.

I wouldn't know since I access owncloud with a laptop and mobile phone. However, the device where owncloud is running has more power.

Haha, lol. Good to know! :D

Where did you get the idea that the server edition is safer than the desktop edition? It isn't. Try reading this:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/31081/wh ... op-version

Actually, if the OS identifies itself as a server, wouldn't that make it more likely that hackers would target it? Servers are where the $$$ is for those guys.

If you want to convert a server edition to a desktop just install the DE of your choice.

Actually, i have read in the past that installing a DE on top of a server is bad because you open up vulnerabilities.

But you have a point there, a server is likely a target for an hacker.

I will read you link as it contains much info and i could learn from it, thanks!
