I checked a thread (not logged in) that I created some time ago and was about to contact someone who posted in there but I couldn't view the message once I was logged in (just this one, other users have replied, too). What's the rationale behind that?

If you use the 'friends and foes' account feature posts by those you've marked as foes won't appear.
