Linux Mint's version number scheme is confusing (number doesn't hint a timeline like 9.04). Also it has the inconvenience of a "runaway" effects. By 2015, we'll be looking at LinuxMint 20.

Overall I prefer the Ubuntu style version number. The codename may be Ok for people handling release but when there are many names it becomes hard to keep track. I entered in the Linux world in 2008, by end of 2009, there are already EIGHT names to remember (4 from Ubuntu and 4 from Linux Mint). And that is only 2 years. Personally I have difficulty to relate that Heroin Hashish means April 2008. And letter H means Linux Mint 8 which means "shortly after October 2009". This is so confusing, but overall, it's a minor inconvenience.

As Mint is based on Ubuntu and follow the same release cycle. What is the problem of naming the next coming release Mint 9.10 ?

I don't think the version number is meant to have any meaning other than which version of the OS it is. Linux Mint 8 isn't "shortly after October 2009," it's the 8th version of the Linux Mint operating system. Adding names to the different versions is just a fun and quirky way of keeping things interesting. That's my view of the whole situation anyway :)

Linux Mint 8 RC1 = Nice
'apt install' can be used on Linux Mint as a shortcut for 'sudo apt-get install'. 'apt x' can be used for various other apt commands as well.

Cool, now we can start talking about the next version without needing a number!

Here is a quick demonstration of the power of a consistent version number. Ubuntu 7.04 means it was released in 2007 April. I can tell this even if I never used that version and I am not an expert in Ubuntu. Can you give me the name of the 2nd version of Mint and on which year was it released? And when you are done, can you tell me how much time it took you to know the answer?

One thing is true that a nice codename is much easier to remember than a number. However, because of the 6 month cycle release, the Year.Month number, in spite of being unpoetic has the power of consistency.

May be this is a pointless discussion, codename is fine and there is no need for remembering the entire release history with every names, years and version numbers. In my opinion, year-based version number is best suited for frequent and fixed timeline releases. Code name & incremental numbers are better suited for releases with longer cycle (several years or more).

Mint does have a consistent version number. Mint 7 means it was the 7th major release since it's inception. I can tell this even if I never used that version and I am not an expert in Mint. Can you give me the name of Ubuntu 6.10 and how many releases came before it? And when you are done, can you tell me how much time it took you to know the answer?

^^^ Just an illustration, version numbering schemes can mean different things to different people, but all in all it doesn't really matter. The 8.04/8.10/9.04 is an odd version progression, as traditionally it would mean that 8.10 was "closer" (technically speaking about the code-base) to 8.04 than 9.04 On the other hand ubuntu's naming scheme makes sense for a time-based release, but since Mint runs on release "when it's ready" it doesn't make as much sense. Personally I always use the codenames anyway, if I'm talking to someone it's a lot easier to say jaunty introduces a new notification system than ubuntu 9.04.

You are not wrong. It is in fact Helena. About time for someone else to start a thread about Linux Mint 9.. We might as well just plan out all of the names in advance!
