kernel 4.17.0 generic working....fyi

Post by oldgranola »

Have a setup purely for experimenting and streaming. Simple amd APU setup on an asus mobo. LM19 partition, MX linux partition, and a 'project' partition. Just for fun, and to try to solve a hardware issue, I gave the mainline kernel 4.17.0 a go from kernel.ubuntu.com on LM19 cinnamon. Much streaming and 24hr 'R' data crunching project with no problems. FYI, it works. Quite nicely in fact. Most everything seems more snappy. Hasn't solved what I really wanted it to, an oscillating streaming sound vs picture sync issue. Figure its still my amd-apu vs the generic graphics driver. Haven't tried it with MX linux, perhaps need a different build than ubuntu's. But heck, the kernel works otherwise quite nicley. Dammn! now I see 4.17.1 is available.......

"working ... fyi" is a problematic statement really because you don't know what hardware and software everybody has. 4.18-rc6 is also working nicely for me and actually fixes an issue that I had up to and including the 4.17 series. Doesn't mean it works for everybody or is supported or even generally a good idea. You will likely face issues in particular when needing dkms drivers (e.g. nvidia).

4.17.9 is actually the latest 4.17 for mainline.
There is however ubuntu 4.17.0-5.8 available in the cosmic-proposed repo (for upcoming Ubuntu 18.10). It's based on 4.17.5 mainline but in the Ubuntu package possibly the preferable option if you want the 4.17 series.
