Question about donations
Hi all! I was wondering how the donation mechanism works for Linux Mint. In fact I noticed that it is an Ltd. company. Is there some particular rule in Ireland that permits donations to an Ltd? And if it's so, do you pay some taxes on the donations? I'm only asking for curiosity

Re: Question about donations
You're supporting the Linux Mint developers with a "pay what you want" financial contribution. It's not a tax deductible donation for you.

Re: Question about donations
Mint (the business) is not a non-profit? If I remember correctly, non-profit status does NOT mean you cannot still write yourself and your workers a paycheck, if that's the concern.

Re: Question about donations
Note, that at the current moment - - you can only use PayPal to Make an Donation,
& that is unlikely to be change, in the fore-see able future.

Re: Question about donations
the rigamorole to do that is so onerous, that it would consume all of the donations, leaving nothing for the developers.jeanjeanjean wrote: ⤴Mon Mar 02, 2020 4:28 amThanks for the answer. May I ask why? Is LM registered as a NPO?
Thanks
I just chip a few bucks as I can spare some, thinking that I will just have them bill me once a month for smaller amounts so I don't forget, or quarterly to save the transfer fees

Re: Question about donations
Although it is a non-profit, but not a charity, if you 'give' to the developers I would think that you could claim what you give as an expense, but not as a charity donation.
The thinking behind this is that should you purchase software that is for a business, that would be a business expense.
With shareware, you have the choice to pay (usually) and that would also be a business expense.
I can't see that it would be any different with Mint or other Freeware / FOSS. It could be put as an expenditure in the course of your day to day business.
As to whether Mint pays taxes, if it is a non-profit, then no (by definition).
However, developers/programmers if they get paid (and I have no idea if they do), they would pay taxes on their earnings.
