[SOLVED] so many releases to mint 19 mate

Post by ogborne » Tue May 14, 2019 4:27 pm

I have used mint 15 and 17. Now I use mint 19. Why so many new updates? Is it necessary to update every new kernel? Do I have something wrong checked for updates? Seems like every day there are two or three. Why so many compared to mint 15 and 17?

Congratulations on the upgrade.

Linux Mint 15 and 17 were by default (too) conservative with security updates. Balancing security and stability with a preference for the latter, leaving it up to the users to select the most suitable time for them to install the needed security updates that were deemed more risky. Unfortunately that meant some amount of users didn't install all needed security updates for their systems.

On Linux Mint 19 the Update Manager instead defaults to select all needed security updates (still installing at a time of the users' choosing, but selecting them by default) and prompts the user to set up Timeshift, a system backup tool that lets you roll back updates in the rare case something goes wrong with it. That way also covering the stability aspect.

I see frequent updates as rather comforting. This means my system is being improved and
security strengthened.

thanks to everyone that responded. I understand the reasoning, but it is still a pain when you have 6 computers.

Hi, ogborne.

You might perhaps say "thank you guys" for the frequent security (kernel) patches to ...
  1. those criminal developers, who use all their talent and knowledge in order to detect and exploit ways of making applications and kernels do things which these applications and kernels had not been designed to do.
  2. the CPU designers working for Intel and AMD, who over years neglected security aspects when designing their CPU's, thus making the criminal developers' job easier, cf. 1. above.
  3. the honest application and kernel developers, who over years did not pay enough attention to security aspects, either, when designing their applications and kernels, thus making the criminal developers' job easier, cf. 1. above.
  4. us computer users, who for many years were only interested in more and more features, but not in security.
Cheers,
Karl

In Update Manager's preferences you can turn on automatic updates if you want.
