Who is still using Mint 18?

Post by KBD47 » Sat Sep 07, 2019 2:20 pm

Mint 18 Xfce has been about the most perfect distro I've ever used. It was perfect from its beta release. I used it for about 2 years running a Plex server it was so solid, and it's still my all time favorite Mint release.
Just wondering who else is still rocking a Mint 18 release?

I still use 18.3, but I'm also testing 19.1, since even in windows I always delayed latest version till I knew most possible problems were sorted out, as much as microsoft was able.

Mint 18.x systems in use here:
  • 1 x Mint 18.1 64-bit Cinnamon
  • 2 x Mint 18.1 32-bit xfce
3 different machines, Mint 18.1 on each of them. It is LTS. It works well. Why should it be given up before the end of April 2021?

I would keep it running beyond 2021 if support didn't end then :)

If osdisc.com was still active, you could use it longer since they offered the entire Repository for purchase, best bought near EOL. Be great if someone else comes along and does the same in future.

I still use 18.3 Cinnamon. It does what I require so I don't plan to change it until it becomes a necessity.

I still use Mint 18 Mate on two laptops and see no need to change until 2021. I didn't even bother to upgrade to 18.3. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. :)

I will be running Mint 18.3 Cinnamon until the cows forget to come home.

I am not the paranoid type that thinks things are going to break, just because "support" has been abandoned.

my Desktop is still running Win7 Pro and never had a single hiccup or intrusion.

no reason for me to abandon Mint 18.3 Cinnamon just becuz someone thinks it is 'no good' anymore.

I have looked at 19.x and don't like it.

I don't know what happened to Mint 19, but I'm seriously hoping Mint 20 will be much better. 19 feels bloated, slow on all my machines, and for some reason Firefox on 19 is a slug. Mint 18 runs well on my machines by contrast, fast and smooth.

If it is the Mint-Y theme, which offends your eyes, then switch to the Mint-X theme on Mint 19.x. Mint-X is still there, just no longer the default.
After having re-enabled the old Mint-X theme, the visual differences between Mint 18.x and Mint 19.x are not so big any more.

In fact, I started keeping the Mint-Y theme enabled on my Mint 19.x, else it was so hard to tell Mint 18.x and Mint 19.x apart.
I looked at Mint 19 and at Mint 18 and back at 19 and again at 18. And already I could no longer tell which one was which.

Tnx,
will look into that.... I have a newish ASUS TUF laptop that refuses to allow 18.x to install, something about the video drivers....

had some life issues that diverted me off the project, have bought a new SSD to replace the current Win10 SSD... hoping that a new slate w/o windoze will allow Mint to install like I want it to.

One is still on 18.3, two are on 19.2. 19.2 is rock solid and look identical to my 18.3

It's so much of a hassle to upgrade that I'm keeping my 18.1 at least through the LTS time period. I have a lot of complicated things to set up every time I do it - and not a ton of time in a row where I can afford to just work on the computer - or have it down for long!

I remember how much work it was upgrading from Mint 13 - certain applications no longer worked (which I relied on!), I found strange bugs (some of which are extremely weird and unreported anywhere - I actually had to get a machine just to run 13 still because of one pervasive issue that affected every system I tried including Windows and other Linux distros but Mint 13 and which affected things I relied on for my self-employment tasks)… Yeah, I'm not going to do that again till I have to!

The current system works pretty well and the bugs I do have (certain programs segfaulting frequently, some bring themselves into focus most all of the time so Alt+Tab is frustrating, etc.), I've gotten used to and can live with. As long as I restart it about once a month, I'm good.

Most of us consider a lack of security updates a reason. No one thinks that Mint 18.3 is 'no good' anymore. That's a straw man argument.

Yeah, I'm keeping mint 19.1 till 2023 then I'll install a new mint version on my spare laptop and then recover the Home folder to it and see how reliable it is. If it is reliable then I'll use it as my main/daily driver. That way I can use the current 19.1 laptop as my daily driver until the other laptop is ready.

Good Luck;

For trial you can install Mint 20 on a separate partition on the old laptop. Or if you have good hardware you can test run 20 in a virtual machine with 19.1 as the host.
