Re: Survey: Which DE/WM do you use on Mint?
Hope it's ok to post this on the forum.
I'm just curious about the numbers and I can't find them anywhere here on the forum.

Re: Survey: Which DE/WM do you use on Mint?
Hey there deanr72, didn't you start exactly the same poll over on the MXLinux forum this morning also? Over there, I voted XFCE because, well... Here I voted Cinnamon, because, well... However, I run more computers with the XFCE desktop than any other, but my everyday main rig sports KDE.

Ha, ha - well spotted!Neil Edmond wrote: ⤴Sun Apr 11, 2021 10:23 am Hey there deanr72, didn't you start exactly the same poll over on the MXLinux forum this morning also? I've just recently switched (back) to XFCE from an extended run on MX-KDE then Openbox and have Mint XFCE one one machine and MX XFCE on another. As such I'm curious about the user base for XFCE as I know that a) many people swear by it and b) many people think it's old and a pretty dead project (although it clearly isn't).
MX and Mint are - to my knowledge - the two most popular Debian-based implementations of XFCE (yes, I know Mint is Ubuntu > Debian) but as they both offer multiple desktop choices now it still makes me wonder how popular XFCE actually is among users given the options that both Mint and MX offer now.
Re: Survey: Which DE/WM do you use on Mint?
Mint Xfce is Ubuntu based. If you really think Ubuntu is that equivalent to Debian Stable, just try adding ubuntu ppas to Debian and see how fast you bork the OS. They';re not the same.deanr72 wrote: ⤴Sun Apr 11, 2021 10:46 am ... I am using KDE, since I have installed LM 20 Ulyana (beta), back in June, 12, last year.
Didn't upgrade to 20.1, yet.

You can find a pie chart on the community website, https://community.linuxmint.com/ I use, MATE DE with Compiz WM.
Mint 20.0, and 21.0 MATE on Thinkpads, 3 X T420, T450, T470, and X200

I use, MATE DE with Compiz WM.
I wonder how up-to-date this is given that it says 9% KDE which hasn't existed on Mint for what, 3-4 years?

Re: Survey: Which DE/WM do you use on Mint?
Since there are no window managers on your list/ poll I'll add those I use
most often:
i3-wm
dwm
less often:
openbox (with tiling functions)
bspwm
hlwm
rarely if ever use:
spectrwm
qtile
awesome
EDIT: I, also, do not use stacking window managers (I stick to tilers except for testing purposes).
stackers not on your list include:
fvwm3
iceWM
jwm
fluxbox
I missed a bunch of window managers....sorry if your favorite is not included.
FWIW: I do not use DEs/

Re: Survey: Which DE/WM do you use on Mint?
The chart shows that 56% of users installed/downloaded Cinnamon, and the poll at the current time shows the same 56% use Cinnamon: 22 of 39 answers.rickNS wrote: ⤴Sat Apr 24, 2021 8:57 am You can find a pie chart on the community website, https://community.linuxmint.com/

FWIW, I install the Xfce version of Mint, then replace almost all the Xfce stuff with Lxde stuff (panel, terminal, file-browser) and run them with DESKTOP_SESSION=fluxbox.

Re: Survey: Which DE/WM do you use on Mint?
I thought the same thing...for a moment.
Then I remembered Clem's post "Update your Computer" where he talks about how many users are still using Mint 17, which has been EOL for quite a while now.
Mint 20.0, and 21.0 MATE on Thinkpads, 3 X T420, T450, T470, and X200
Re: Survey: Which DE/WM do you use on Mint?
I'm not sure. Where do I find this information? Also, is this the ultimate noob question?
Re: Survey: Which DE/WM do you use on Mint?
Mint 18.3 KDE only went EOL April this year.

Re: Survey: Which DE/WM do you use on Mint?
Cinnamon is my first choice on any distro that natively offers it. IMO it is the most thoughtful and complete design for GUI users.
Xfce is my first choice on slower hardware or where Cinnamon isn't natively available. Very flexible and reliable too; just wish it had better screen scaling.
No problems with Mate or KDE, just happen to prefer the above two. I want to like Gnome, as I'm quite a fan of some of it's modern features, but it is also missing too much for my personal taste.

Re: Survey: Which DE/WM do you use on Mint?
Not recently, it was a couple of years ago that I last tried PopOS. The most recent Gnome desktop that I used was via current Fedora Workstation, where it was very good as far as it went but didn't seem to get many additions. If PopOS are widening the functionality and get lots of positive feedback, hopefully the Gnome team might be watching with interest.
