The popularity indicators
Hi,
I'm investigating the popularity of Linux Mint.
I compared the popularity of Linux Mint with others in terms of the number of followers on Twitter.
https://vegam57.livedoor.blog/archives/8499165.html
Please let me know if there are any other good indicators.

Re: The popularity indicators
Popularity probably doesn't matter too much unless you are looking for bragging rights in the playground.
What matters is the support you might get and, more importantly, functionality.
Arch Linux is popular but would probably be considered to be not as user friendly.
Puppy is popular but is orientated towards older hardware.
Mint is, just Mint (in a good way).
If you do go for Mint, this is most likely the best guide on what to do once you've installed Mint (It is written by Pjotr who stalks these forums righting wrongs):

Re: The popularity indicators
Thank you for your harsh advice.
I think the popularity is also important.
I believe popularity is the driving force behind the continued distribution.
That's why I will continue to pay close attention to its popularity.
Because I like Linux Mint.

Re: The popularity indicators
those popularity indicators are an flawed system, anyway,
as they are often based upon the number of clicks to their web site,
rather than the number of actual downloads that were made.
you can get an idea of the number of downloads that were available,
by using an site such as https://www.softpedia.com/ which hosts most foss software programs.
the most commonly used used web site, is of course, www.distrowatch.com/

Re: The popularity indicators
I've probably done two downloads of the iso in 3(?), 4(?) years and near 40 installations in a couple of years. There are casual users of some of the computers plus everyday users so in my case not easy to figure popularity. How often this occurs elsewhere I don't know but it certainly could make a real figure harder to find.
I see a map with 85 users noted for New Zealand, https://community.linuxmint.com/
How did they figure that? At least 25 users I know of in our village of 20,000. There are 5,000,000 people in the whole country.

Thanks for the interesting comments.
The law of large numbers, which is the basis of statistics, is also an interesting approach.

Re: The popularity indicators
Sheep? You also want to know the quantity of RAM as well? Some people just keep bleating. Woolly headed I'd say.... I'll send the dog out to round them up if you wish.absque fenestris wrote: ⤴Sun May 30, 2021 2:55 pmOf course, one would have to know the fine distribution of the sheep heads in New Zealand - and whether they are rather two-legged or four-legged...RollyShed wrote: ⤴Fri May 28, 2021 12:02 am ...

Well, it wasn't supposed to be harsh. Glad you got what you were after.
As for Pjotr and Moem, well, I can only apologise for their behaviour. I might report them to a mod for bad taste. Oh wait..... Oh.

Re: The popularity indicators
I had thought the number on the map was Linux users per country not forum users.
However I will not be cow..ed, we'll milk this for all it is worth. Now where's the dog.. get out there you've got cows to heard (keep listening) in for milking. I know some of you think it a bit of a yoke but don't let the horsing around fool you. Eggs..actly.
Sorry Moem, it looks like I might have exceeded the jokes per posting limit?

Sir, you too will be reported as soon as I have stopped crying.
And Rolly should know better than to play with people who come from the wrong side of tracks.
Re: The popularity indicators
I dunno if this helps at all, but there are currently 58,459 user-submitted package reviews for Linux Mint, by 17,699 different users. In-case you're curious, I got these numbers by parsing the database file, which I got using previewer(1).
I'm also Terminalforlife on GitHub.
