Why am I getting "Linux Mint End of Life" warnings?

Post by markg7605 »

I had been using Linux Cinnamon Mint for several years on this computer, but installed LMDE 4 a year or so ago, then updated to LMDE 5 this year. They were all new, full installations, which wiped out the previous versions.

Yesterday, when I started Firefox, I got the screen shown below:
end-of-life-warning-linux-mint-2022-09-03.png
I didn't copy the URL for the message but it was from Linux Mint, and ended in "/debbie", if memory serves me right. I believe it was an legitimate LM site.

Here is my computer information, though I doubt this will have anything to do with the question:

My question is: Why did I get a warning for an OS that I haven't used or had installed for at least a few years? Should I be concerned about this?

Thank you,

The interesting part of your post is the sentence, that you saw this after opening Firefox. So, the url of this site would be of interest.

Educated guess:
  • After having installed LMDE 5 from scratch, the old Firefox profile (~/.mozilla), was restored on the newly installed LMDE 5.
(Hey, this is the procedure, which I keep on following on every new Mint installation.)
  • The restored Firefox profile, backed up on LMDE 4 Debbie still, holds a setting, which tells that the Firefox homepage is https://www.linuxmint.com/start/debbie/ (where else should it point?
  • This page, however, today simply displays the warning, which we read in the screenshot, shared with us in post #1. The page does not check anything and therefore it does not realize that the installed and running OS is LMDE 5, no longer LMDE 4.
Suggested solution:

The people of Alderaan have been bravely fighting back the clone warriors sent out by the unscrupulous Sith Lord Palpatine for 792 days now.
