Major problems in IRC as of late

Post by hemimaniac »

Well a few of you may know that I am more active in the IRC help channels then on the forum, but the IRC is beginning to be less attractive. In a day I probably drift through 20-30 servers (IRC) on top of the 12 I'm regularly visiting or watching and i have to say i have NEVER seen the rash of inappropriate behaviour as of late, and more so, NEVER seen a channel on any server EVER left op-less with the traffic average linuxmint-help, -debian, -chat.. I have personally witness assaults on this channel from spammers, trolls, and delinquents, and I HAVE MADE MY OBJECTIONS about it heard and it apparently has fallen upon deaf ears via what ever passage the message took, whether it was mentioning it to other ops, moderators, or generally voicing the opinion. as PROOF I give you the following;

Code: Select all

You notice near the end of that that an op re-joined the channel, only because someone went off channel looking for an op for the channel in question. So with that no-one can say that it is exaggerated, the problem is real and it needs to be dealt with, I have never even seen the other Distro's IRC channels get anywhere near what ours is of late, and it is actually i hate to admit getting embarrassing. IMHO it is also dragging down the quality of help in the channels as of late. This needs to be addressed, and NOW, and please don't for a second, even think of laying that "well a couple people are off right now",over this, that is lame and a poor excuse for server logistics and administration.

Now it is true the mods and ops are volunteers, but there is absolutely no way they can be there all the time, so my suggestion is simple. "beef up the staff and make it a volunteer base again"
not the feeling that one needs to be there because it will get bad if they leave, and more often then not as of late it has.

Re: Major problems in IRC as of late

I was afk when this all went down and I apologize for that.
the fact is we do seem to be thin on ops as of late and a few of us haven't been around
as much, myself included. we all have lives of course :D

with that said I agree that we indeed need more ops.
oscar799 was looking into just that last time we spoke....

None needed, I was just merely pointing out the obvious, the "thin" op base can't be there all the time, with RL and work, too much to ask, but beefing up the channel security should be too much to ask for.

This post has been edited :) actually a :D

Glad to see LinXea was op'd and surprised myself by accepting the op position as well. I really didn't want it, but saw the desperate need. With luck, the trolling will slow down to a trickle now that there is an active op 24/7. I've been an op near a week now, and have found to my amazement that there are few troll attacks so far, maybe it's because I've been constantly seen as being there by answering ?'s and the occasional please use pastebin.

Right now, I'm very active in channel for the main reason, make everyone realize "yes there is an active op at this time of day", but I can't keep this up forever, soon I'll be slowing down and won't be monitoring the channels every second. So expect the regulars to call my nick , which by the way is hooked to a loud bell sound, so I do know I'm being called, even when watching a movie or in the kitchen making coffee or other household chores. If I don't respond with in a minute, call me again, I won't be far, unless I've gone down the shops and I announce this in #pimpmymint so the regulars know.

Anyway, I hope that the standards of IRC remain as good as they have been the past week :)

Re: Major problems in IRC as of late

The more popular Mint gets the worse it will get
The only way to stop them is with tighter security and that will cause problems for others also
Most of these spammers and trolls are outside the community and very hard to stop no matter how much help you have

a bad word filter will stop maybe 30%
Then you have to start banning IP addresses and that leads to a lot of problems
