We better have a Talk

Post by john721 » Wed Oct 09, 2019 8:19 am

Today I tried Linux Mint 19.2 as a live disk. Normally on Windows 7 I use Firefox, DuckDuckGo as my search engine and ad blockers.

I went into Firefox and Linux Mint's default search engine was Yahoo. I went to a webpage about Thunderbird email tools. Then I saw four adverts on the page; they were [NOT a joke] medical diagrams of the male urinary tract and organs. They were some sort of urinary/prostate advert. This was disgusting. This ruined my web surfing. I closed Firefox instantly. For the record I have not searched for any such medical topic in any way. I have no idea why anyone would try to sell me that. I also don't know if the adverts were real or malware.

I realise that the internet in 2019 is a total disaster. Anyone who surfs the internet without an ad blocker will go insane. But this is no excuse; Linux Mint as a distro must take responsibility for using a scumbag search engine like Yahoo as the default. I have donated many times to things like Blender; I do not deserve to have my internet surfing ruined. This is the worst experience that I have had in a browser. The only experience as bad was the podcaster Miro that had adverts of prostitutes. Again, you don't want to believe that? Fine.

Your default engine being Yahoo says what values your distros hold: values that put money ahead of my safety. Especially in a live disk; surely that is the lowest of the low. The person is at their most vulnerable in a new distro and without things like ad blockers. Yet I have to see male organs. That is a disgrace. You as a distro are a disgrace. I had liked Linux Mint. But now I should look for a new distro if I have any sense. As a Windows 10 refusenik I want to migrate to somewhere better.

It is very easy to change the default search engine in Firefox.

2nd, though who uses a Live Session to do any searching on the Internet??
and 3rd, this has nothing to do with the quality of Linux Mint distros...

I always use Google.

on the Options/Search scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on Find more search engines

Then click on "make this your default search engine"

then go to the options and unclick all of the crap search engines.
Yahoo is the very 1st one that I get rid of, it is trashola deluxe as you just noted.

If you think that using Linux means you won't get adware/javascript hacks etc, think again.

Haha. I bet the term "tools" was the trigger. Let's thank good old Yahoo for giving rise to this highly amusing rant.

For all Yahoo's faults, and they are many, it will not take you directly to **** unless you click on a dodgy link somewhere. User discretion and common sense is still required on every operating system.

That's odd. I just used a certain 4 letter word beginning with p and this forum has automatically substituted 4 asterisks. That's taking prurience a bit far.

This forum's also open to Americans and they're a bit... let's call it slow, in a cultural-development sense.

Well, that's today's laugh, very good, laughed all the way through this thread.....

As for web browsers, search engines and all, there is a list of search engines by default in Firefox from Mint and it is very easy to install Chrome. Yes, a few clicks needed to install Google but not rocket science (as they say).

The OP seem to have missed the fact that you can easily tailor things to the way you want them when using Mint.

It could have been funnier. The OP could have threatened to swallow a whole bottle of coca-cola and jump up and down on the spot until it fizzed out of their ears.

Considering he claims in another thread to "have played with many linux distros for 10 years", I wonder if he is the one having some fun.

Yeah I was disgusted by the ads too. Then I realised I was on **** hub. First thing I did was add Chrome, Opera and the Malwarebytes extension on both.
