Finally dumping wine.

Post by Flemur »

I've been using wine apps for years and finally decided to ditch wine and replace some of my favorite programs with Real Linux™ versions...one reason being that I no longer spend hours editing images or audio.

Basics:
Adobe audition <-- ocenaudio (audacity still there, just in case, in all its buggy glory)
foobar2000 <-- googlesmm (deadbeef and audacious have stupid search functions)
Photoshop <-- gimp
IrfanView <-- xnview and drawing (just for drawing arrows!)
Avidemux <-- avidemux linux version.

No replacements yet:
Mp3tag <-- Haven't found a decent linux tagger.
Autopano (image panoramas), Photomatrix (HDR and tone-mapping) ...

Edit: thanks, everyone, for the mp3 tag info!

I've been using EasyTag for several years now. Having come from Mac OS X and iTunes, I was very relieved to have found both EasyTag as well as Sound Converter. My entire music collection is an archive of FLAC files with meticulously hand-crafted metadata. I've never seen any other software which comes close.

I've been using Puddletag for years. Works quite well for my use :)

I've never used mp3tag, so I don't know what features you need.

But for tagging, I've used kid3 https://kid3.kde.org

I will never be a wineo. Makes me ill to even think about it. At best, it's a contamination of something far more pure. Good you ditched it.

I use nothing but Linux GUI's for this very reason. Audacity, EasyTag, Kid3-qt, Gimp and vlc

I could never get wine to work properly. I just wanted alternatives to MS paint and Picasa. I found an online version of MS paint which works well. https://jspaint.app/#local:7472b2e94dcb48

As for Picasa, I've tried many ways, but have given up. I have an old Windows 7 machine I can use if I need to use anything Windows dependent. Also, I can pretty much do the same stuff on my phone now, so no need for Picasa.

After playing around with Wine and PlayOnLinux for a while (FastStone Viewer, IrfanView, ShiftN, Photoshop 7) I have now deleted everything, including Mono.
Really interesting was actually only Photoshop 7: a twenty-year-old program that celebrated resurrection - really good and fast, but unfortunately without taking into account the Hi-DPI monitor. It has been unusable on Windows 10 for a long time.

Personally I use Codeweavers CrossOver Linux for windows application installations. Works everytime.
