So leaving at default will still offer Cinnamon Spices in the update, but they won't be automatically installed?

I don't know as I don't use Spices, but I suspect the UX to be the same as with other installed apps. e.g., if you have Spices installed, they will show as available updates.

I use Smurmoph's Mint-Y-Dark-VBB. I don't think he's with us anymore (loss on many levels). So I don't know if that is Spices or not, but I don't think so.

Spices are themes, applets, desklets and extensions for Cinnamon that were default installed or that you added by installing them through Cinnamon Settings. If you installed them some other way, they won't get update notifications. All available Spices can also be browsed on https://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/.

This Week In Linux Episode 154 talks about Cinnamon 5.0, and they said it's supposed to ship with LM 20.2, and suggested that will probably drop about mid-July. Of course, that's not coming directly from Clem, so it's not exactly gospel, but it was the first I'd heard about this.

I can confirm the 20.2 Beta does include Cinnamon 5.

As in the monthly news, the Update Manager will show notifications and can be configured in preferences.

A week with Mint 20.2 Xfce beta and it is smoooth so far. I've worked it pretty hard. Networking, Audio over VNC, VNC into 2 servers at a time. Printers picked up automatically, My Brother Printers and it even found and configured my neighbour's HP (on my WiFi - test print worked).

Thumbs Up from me.

This is simply showing off, but it is a direct screen capture of Mint 20.2 Xfce while it is recording itself (using an ffmpeg command in a Terminal).
Obviously Desktop Video Wallpaper is still working and all the Compiz bits as well as both the VNC viewers.
No glitches or unusual behavior so far . .

So, I'm back to running Linux Mint 20.1 on my desktop. I can't wait for the 20.2 release.

Ultimately, I've decided it's best to keep other distros in VMs, unless I'm going to set up a separate box. And if I do, then that's going to probably get a server release.

Or skip the mirrors and use the torrents ...

Cinnamon: https://linuxmint.com/torrents/linuxmin ... so.torrent

MATE: https://linuxmint.com/torrents/linuxmin ... so.torrent

Xfce: https://linuxmint.com/torrents/linuxmin ... so.torrent

Edit: Gave clarity to the links. P.S. As this is a Beta thread, anyone had already installed 20.2 via the Beta ISO, just update your packages normally.

So far no issues, upgrade was painless and took 10 minutes max, unlike Windows where you spend two to three hours in agony while it installs all the bloatware and spyware on your system.
