12th gen processors and Mint
Anyone here loaded Mint on a 12th generation Intel processor? If so has it worked right, and do you notice any differences?

https://www.phoronix.com/review/windows-linux-mid22adl back in July talks about kernel 5.18, but I realize IF you're the type that prefers to stick to whatever comes down the LM Update Manager pipe, (shrugs) this might not be helpful enough...Still given the time frame difference, I don't see why a new enough version of kernel 5.15.whatever-whatever shouldn't be good enough

I haven't much reason to believe any of that is nonsense given 12th gen has been around for a good chunk of this year easily.

Re: 12th gen processors and Mint
Thanks, I am looking for one of our members who has loaded and run a 12th gen Intel processor. Good articles though. Will Kernel 5.15 work with the 12th Gen Intel processors? According to the Ubuntu forums, you need at least 5.15.0.34 as a minimum.
Re: 12th gen processors and Mint
Just one? I've answered questions or helped probably at least a dozen people at this point. Most Mint users do not frequent the Chat forum so I don't know how much feedback you would get.
It depends on for what one is using their computer and how many monitors they have attached whether or not they have noticed issues.
That is not an issue. The latest 5.15 kernel is 5.15.0-48. There is also a 5.17-oem kernel available. I would expect the 5.19 HWE kernel will become available some time in the October-ish timeframe.

Re: 12th gen processors and Mint
In one of my old desktop tower computers bought back way back in 2010, I kept the case and replaced the motherboard, the processor, the heatsink, new 32 GB DDR4 memory and power supply. The processor in it now is a 12th generation core processor which is an Intel i7-12700K (1 physical processor, 12 cores; 20 threads).
The computer has two; 500 GB SSD's in it with both hard drives running 64 bit Linux Mint 21 (Vanessa) Xfce with the 5.15.0-48 kernel. Since I'm not a gamer, I didn't have to add any extra fans for additional cooling or replace my AMD Radeon video card. No problems with this processor.

Re: 12th gen processors and Mint
Thank you for that. I put this here since I am specifically asking about software on the hardware, not just hardware itself. I am very interested in how the P and E cores work under LInux, especially Linux Mint.
Re: 12th gen processors and Mint
Some of the Gen 12 P&E core handling is as far out as kernel 6.1. For a reference, 6.0 is approximately 5.19. The P*E scheduling will only make a difference to battery time.
Re: 12th gen processors and Mint
Kernel 6.0 is the one right after 5.19.
The kernel team decided not use 5.20 and skipped to 6.0 instead.

Re: 12th gen processors and Mint
So, this is probably a dumb question, but until kernel 6.1 the P and E cores will act as "regular" cores and there will be no benefit in having "efficiency" cores? I think I phrased that right...
Re: 12th gen processors and Mint
Currently all cores are treated equally, no matter how they identify.
Android Linux can direct video and games to the power slurpers and messaging to the power sippers. You have no control. In desktops, it could be the same initially. For laptop on battery, you need two options at least.
* Go Go Go The charger is on the bench next to me and I can plug it in any time.
* Slow Slow Slow I am a two hour train ride from the charger and the battery is down to 3%.

Re: 12th gen processors and Mint
I absolutely agree. I am waiting for more control over the P and E cores to see how much more battery life you can get out of the 12th gen. I am looking also at what the new AMD chips are going to do in terms of power efficiency. Does anyone know if Mint will have an option for kernel 6.1 when it arrives?Petermint wrote: ⤴Sat Sep 24, 2022 8:38 pm Currently all cores are treated equally, no matter how they identify.

Re: 12th gen processors and Mint
When it arrives where? Kernel 6.1 is a mainline kernel. The process for mainline kernels to be tried/used in Linux Mint is the same it has always been.
Whether or not Canonical decides to use that kernel as a basis for an OEM or HWE kernel (and thus makes it available through Synaptic) is unknown at this time.

Re: 12th gen processors and Mint
Mint 20.3 had extra kernels available for use and download, I guess that is my question is Mint 21 going to have other kernels than 5.15?SMG wrote: ⤴Sun Sep 25, 2022 11:24 amWhen it arrives where? Scroll back up to my prior post in this topic where I explained there already is another one available and I expect a second one to be available soon.

For some reason it is not showing up in my update manager which is why I was confused.SMG wrote: ⤴Sun Sep 25, 2022 3:25 pmScroll back up to my prior post in this topic where I explained there already is another one available and I expect a second one to be available soon.

OEM kernels would only show in Update Manager if you have installed one, either through the command line or from Synaptic. (One can install the latest 5.17-oem kernel with

I am waiting for the HWE kernels to arrive in update manager, because those OEM caused slow shutdowns for me on 20.
Re: 12th gen processors and Mint
Ubuntu 22.10 (Kinetic Kudu) is slated for release in approximately 2 weeks. I expect it will have the 5.19 kernel. That kernel will probably show up in Update Manager some time after that release (based on what has historically happened).

Re: 12th gen processors and Mint
Good to know, I prefer those kernels that come in the update manager they just seem to work better.
