Which Mint distro, desktop, and apps make up your ideal USB drive?

Debian Squeeze base install + XFCE desktop environment + transparency + gnomenu = FTW
As for the list of applications: Firefox (with Flash), Abiword, Gnumeric, VLC, Clementine, Docky, Gparted, Gnome Disk Utility, Baobab (aka disk usage analyzer), Remmina, Xchat, Filezilla, Gimp, Evince, Geany, and Docky. I'll post up a screenshot later; I made a remastered iso with Remastersys ^^ including all those programs up there.

The latest ubuntu .iso

Not sure I understand the question :D

Only use liveUSB outside OS installation for e.g. running gparted, doesn't really matter much what's on it as long as it includes gparted, what else is on it doesn't matter much either :)
Thank you for this thread. That’s all I can say. You most definitely have made this forum into something special. You clearly know what you are doing, you’ve covered so many bases. Thanks!
