Dell Server Support

Postby cewsmoke » Tue Mar 11, 2014 6:33 pm

Since Mint really revolves around a gui environment, I think it would be a good idea to look at Dell/HP/etc. roadmaps for what kind of hardware is going into their server line and ensuring there is at least basic driver support. For example, I am working on current generation Dell servers (r420, r720, etc.) These servers are coming with the Matrox g200er2 video cards. These force the gui into software rendering mode which eats up CPU cycles and is notably less responsive. I spent a great deal of time discovering that there is no easy/feasible way of getting this card to work in Linux Mint 16. I realize it is not possible to have drivers for every video card, but when trying to branch out and get into new markets such as business server environments doing things like this could go a long way.

Hello, cewsmoke.

Currently Linux Mint is focussed on the workstations, not the server machines. Currently Linux Mint does not offer a dedicated server edition.
So for server machines, the Ubuntu server distributions may be more appropriate.
Having said so, this is the current situation, who can tell where Linux Mint may be going in the next years?

Reason: Thread moved from "development" to "chat about linux mint", supporting particular Dell machines is not a Mint development topic
Old bugs good, new bugs bad! Updates are evil: might fix old bugs and introduce no new ones.
