Anyone Use COMODO AV with Mint?

Post by TechGuyAndrew »

I am wondering if anyone uses the COMODO antivirus for Linux in Mint? I was just curious and installed it to check it out. I don't really think it's necassary, but I do use thumb drives between Windows and Mint machines. Any thoughts?

AV is not needed if you are using LM as a desktop, but it is useful to "protect" window machines "inside" if you are using LM as a server. If you are routinely passing
files between window and linux, and worried about naughty stuffs, then AV would be your solution. There are alot of AV - a popular one is ClamAV. Here's my
list of AVs.

http://www.clamav.net/ (non-commerical; Clam AntiVirus)
http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=14549 (non-commercial; kbitdefender)
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php (commerical; AVG Anti-Virus)
http://www.bitdefender.com/ -> linux (commercial; bitdefender
http://www.f-prot.com/ (commerical; F-Prot Antivirus)
http://www.hbedv.com (commerical; AntiVir)
http://www.ravantivirus.com/ (commerical; RAV Antivirus)
http://www.avast.com/ (commerical; avast!)
http://www.norman.com/ (commerical; Norman)
http://www.pandasoftware.com/ (commerical; Panda)
http://www.astaro.com/# (commercial; Astaro's products)

I never used AV, so I can't comment about COMODO. Personally, I would try clamAV first.

Do the Windows machines not have an AV-program?

Hello TechGuy Andrew - I think it would be wise to go to their download page: https://www.comodo.com/home/internet-se ... -linux.php

Then scroll down the page and have a look at the release notes that are located directly beneath the second large download button. Here's a copy and paste:

System Requirements:
CPU: 2 GHz / RAM: 2 GB / Disk: 40 GB
Supported Operating Systems (32 bit and 64 bit)
Ubuntu 12.04 / Red Hat Enterprise
Linux Server 5.9, 6.3 / Fedora 17 / SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 / OpenSUSE Linux 12.1 / Debian 6.0 / CentOS 5.9, 6.2 / Mint 13 / CentOS 5.8, 6.2
Supported Mail systems
Sendmail 8.14.4 / qmail 1.06 / Postfix 2.5.x or higher / Exim 4.x / Amavis 2.6.4

I don't know about you, but this doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling about trying Comodo. Either the software itself is way out of date, or someone has fallen behind several years in updating the information on the webpage.

Yes. Don't install any antivirus in Linux. It's not only useless, but even endangers your Linux:

any decent Windows A/V should auto check the usb drive when it is inserted,
but - i've seen some that don't do that automatically & that it has to be enabled in the options area.

& as said, above, you don't need a Linux A/V solution.
