LightMint17-3

Post by Pythzor » Thu Aug 27, 2015 10:34 pm

Hello,

I'm presently confined to using an older notebook/tablet: Compaq tc4400, 2.0 GHz, 3 GB ram, 160 GB HD, (no optical drive); Windows 10, Ubuntu 12.04.5, LightMint17-3. I'd like to have Linux Mint on this computer since Mint is my favorite OS. The problem right now is that I only have a one GB flash drive to use for installation. So whatever OS I want to install, it has to fit on a one GB flashdrive; (Windows 7 was already installed when I was given this computer).

Linux Mint 13 Maya fits but doesn't work very well (to my satisfaction). I did a few apt upgrades (from 13 to 14 to 15 to 16), but with 15 and 16, I only got the black screen of death. Googling around for an edition of Mint that will fit on a one GB flashdrive, I happened upon LightMint17-3 @ http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=107350 (Remastered Mint CD/DVD).

LightMint17-3 is based on Lubuntu 14.04 and Mint 17. I see that the /etc/apt/sources.list is all ubuntu -- nothing Mint. I'ved installed Mate with synaptic package manager but I don't see any way to boot into it. Does anyone have any suggestions. Replacing the /etc/apt/sources.list and the blank /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list with the Mint 17 /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list is of no help as Lubuntu can't read it.

Essentially, I'm trying to end up with a Mint 17.3 on my notebook.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
Intel Core2 Duo, 3.0 GHz, 6 GB ram, 160 GB hdd; Ultimate Edition Oz Unity Star Sapphire (discontinued Ubuntu 14.04 remix that I've been able to upgrade to a 16.04 base); Linux Mint 18.2/Mate.

Buy or borrow few GB flash drive is not option?
P.S. I recall Novell Netware 2.15 came on about 40 floppies. Modern techy guys would have found such tnstallation was far more better than sex
Windows assumes I'm stupid but Linux demands proof of it

I'm using LightMint17-3 right now (I just installed Enlightment-17 and am really enjoying it). And it updates and apt works; it's obviously still being supported.

Yeah, I finally got a bigger flash drive (8 GB) and have installed Mint 13 Maya / Mat`e. But I'm keeping LightMint, too.

Cheers
