17.1 Cinnamon was my first go at Linux Mint, and i've been hugely impressed with it, especially as it is running fine on a pretty rubbish old laptop (that was using Windows Vista originally).

17.1 has near completely converted me into a Linux guy, but i still need Windows for some things i use for work etc. I have a few desktops and a few other laptops in the family home, and will be looking to either setup dual-boot or just replace the older outdated Windows OS with some version of Mint. It is just such a great OS, love the stability, security and ease of use (for a Linux!). 9/10 (would be a 10 but i sadly still need Windows for some things!)

Amazing work from the Mint team and my thanks for showing another way other than Windows for my family PC needs.
Laptop overheating? Check link here:itsfoss guide . Also a move from Cinnamon to XFCE can give a -5 to -10 degrees C change on overheating hardware.

Did a clean install LM 17.2 all works well so see no reason to change a good thing.
What advantages would be gained from upgrading to LM 17.3.

Not a lot of differences. If someone has a very new computer, the newer kernel and xorg might give better results.

No reason for me then as I'm on a 10 year old desktop.

Thanks

Most noticeable:
Several bug fixes (for me the biggest and very important enhancement).
Optional preview window for the window list (aka taskbar)
Enhanced workspace switcher applet

The complete list is here.

Ok in spite of what I said I went ahead and upgraded from 17.2 to 17.3 and so far see no big difference.
Figure if I don't like it I can reinstall as no big deal there.

Guess I was expecting some major changes though I am not impressed.
The upgrade went very smooth and I encountered absolutely no problems.

Latest and greatest yeah right as I see no change.
So we learn by doing.

Really, the only times I don't upgrade are when I get feedback that an update has problems.

I stayed on LM 17.2 until HP finally rev'd their hplip and related plug-ins to support my LaserJet p1102w in 17.3. Once that happened, I wiped and installed 17.3 fresh. Honestly, I couldn't be happier.

I've stuck with 17.1 KDE and was wondering about the Upgrade. It seems complicated and unnecessary for me. My only question that comes to mind - from what I've read - is there better security with the newer versions? Not one person in this Thread has mentioned this. I am on an old HP Laptop 10yrs old, so don't think I even need this, all works fine so if there is no security issue then I will stay with what I have.

pcpunk, Thanks

@pcpunk , the security fixes come to ALL Mint 17 editions. I'm sticking with Qiana.

Thanks Rich, why do people say different then? From what I've read some say this, or maybe I misread some stuff. Some posters say this so I assume they are not well informed?

I'm so glad as I've wanted to just stick with 17.1 and don't really have many issues.

Thanks again, pcpunk

Who says different? Where? Link?

Errors can always happen, but I cannot remember having read some misinformation about that in the forum.

Why the question mark? You must answer this.

If it was not here, than a wrong information can be - or a misunderstanding.

No worries, pcpunk: Mint 17.1 will continue to receive security updates just as long as all other members of the Mint 17 series. Which means until May, 2019. :)

If it was not here, than a wrong information can be - or a misunderstanding. This sentence is more confusing than my Question Mark lol, just kidding brother.

Answers in Blue above, hopefully

Thanks Pjotr!!! so glad this is true.

You're welcome! Don't let it stop you from trying Mint 18, though... It's going to be beautiful. :)

17.3 KDE on my laptop and 17.2 KDE on my desktop. Not even planning on 18 at all

Still running 17.1 XFCE here from a USB stick, largely on very old/underpowered hardware (old Compaq Mini). I could upgrade I know but it works superbly - and I'm lazy about stuff like that so long as I am getting the security updates!
