Linux Mint used in public library

Post by Janni »

Realizing it has been years since my last visit to my local library in Norway, I decided to go for a visit yesterday.
I was very pleased to see that all the PC's available for the public was running Linux Mint 17. I briefly checked the distribution. It was very locked down (to avoid people messing up) but seemed to be running MATE version.
System worked very well and performance was flawless even if the hardware looked very old.
All PC's was displaying the vanilla Linux Mint wallpaper when not in use.

YAY for Mint :D

Nice to hear it. Mint is ideal for something like this.

Awesome.

I had proposed something similar to my local library a year ago (installing Lubuntu on the old XP computers to recycle them) but unfortunately they had to decline. The reason given was that the library personal as well as the public was more familiar with Windows and have a need for MS office specifically. So they upgraded instead..

The Wenatchee, WA, USA library also uses Linux. Their catalog and patron data is stored in Koha, probably running on Debian. They have about 20 computers with public access, and all of them run Linux, Ubuntu, I think. I always have to laugh about the people that say Linux is hard to use when I see members of the general public using the library's Linux computers for word processing, web browsing, and so on. I don't know if the library has any Windows computers or not. None that I know of.

I think school systems that teach computer classes should all have at least Windows and Linux computers so that students and teachers will have the opportunity to use and learn each OS.

Just my opinion.

I suspect that whoever set it up is in these forums. But what do you mean when you said it was very locked up?
How secure is it from modification?
I have a favorite game. It's on my Youtube Channel.

I switched my wife over to Mint a few years ago. Renamed the menu START - put Libre Office Calc and Writer shortcuts on the desktop and renamed them EXCEL and WORD and put her favorite browser FF on her desktop as well. She never missed a beat moving over from Windows.

Here where i live they have moved the library’s machines to ubuntu. I had not used them in over a year or so , so i was surprised to say the least.
