Don't be boring - add an avatar!

Post by MintBean »

Okay, in case anyone lacks a sense of humour, the title is meant 'tongue firmly in cheek.'

So the idea here is to encourage people to add an avatar to their profile. I think it brightens the forum up a bit and maybe makes it a bit more 'personal' and welcoming for newbies.

Drop a post if you decide to add an avatar.

'A character that matches your personality' is a pretty good definition of 'avatar', so there is no 'or' here.
But whatever you call it, please make it HTTPS. Yours isn't yet.

As requested I've removed it. Not sure how to search for images with https protocol, so gave up for now.

I'm no expert, but what is the actual risk here?

1) Is there any result worse than someone intercepts the traffic and changes my avatar? A lot of effort on the part of the hacker to change one avatar.
2) Does the board really pull down the full screen HD source picture from the link every time someone accesses a thread, or does it rescale once and store a single max 6kb image locally, never again accessing the source image?
3) If there is a real security threat here, shouldn't the board be modified to enforce the https only rule, rather than word of mouth? I bet there are a ton of people on here with plain old http avatars.

Ah, that's from back when I'd caught the Habitual virus. That was a pretty confusing time. I kept hitting my head on the treshold when going through a door.

Not a security risk, but a privacy / tracking risk. I made the suggestion to block avatars from not secured connections already half a year ago. Not only would it solve the risk, it would also show those users, who still http-connect their avatar, that they missed something.

In case, that the major browsers should by default also block the mixed passive content I guarantee, that a big crying about allegedly broken web sites will be started by those, who connect their avatar still via http.

I used the postimage.org one that was mentioned upthread and it was pretty simple. No registering or anything. Just put the link to the image in the box and they ask you if you want it resized (which you do - to avatar size) and then there ya go.

I have a real life outside of Mint. MInt is only a tool. Don't need an avatar.
Wish I could figure out how to stop a avatar from running. Reminds me of many sites now trying to get my attention with Gifs, videos, pop ups.

Lindows, Linspire, Freespire, Ubuntu, Mint 15 Cinnamon, Mint 16 XFCE, Mint 17 Cinnamon 64 bit. MInt 18 64 bit Cinnamon.
