What DE to drop?

Post by MintyO » Tue Mar 28, 2017 3:16 pm

Which Mint edition(s) would you choose to abandon if you had the power/had to for some reason. Why? You can choose 2.

I don't mind having all the current options, even more would be fine by me. The more to choose from makes it better in my opinion. That being said, I chose Mate. Cinnamon will be great when it has matured a bit. Currently Xfce takes the number one place for me. I don't see the point in Mate because it just has some "meh" factor and Xfce has all its other good attributes covered already. KDE is just plain silly, though I see it as a very viable DE if it suites your taste.

What a negative way of asking. Instead of asking which 2 DEs people like best, you ask which 2 DEs they like least.
I'm curious why do you want to know?

Not my intention, and originally I was gonna make it a choice of 1 and call the topic "Sofie's DE". Now you can choose up to 2 and give a reason (if you feel like it) if it's a genuine hope that some of the DEs get dropped or are you just voting one that's least to your liking. The results of the poll might actually reflect the "favorites" more accurately, or that is how I see the logic of the question.

Why is because of a related topic got me thinking about this. Have seen opinions from different members scattered around the forums, but don't have any sort "big picture", just my (probably wrong) own estimate. And curiosity most of all.

You should drop the 2 not authored by Mint.

None of them. I haven't tried them all as yet.

None.
I like MATE and Xfce a lot, and I'd be using Cinnamon if my hardware were more powerful.

I don't have a use for KDE yet but it's still nice to have as an option.

There are cases, where the question itself gives a problem. This is one them.

If one thinks about the offered DEs, the first questions would logically be:
  • Do we have enough DEs?
Do there exist reasons, to limit the number of offered DEs?
    Should additional DEs be added?
Should DEs get removed or replaced by another? Which in this case?
And for all of them: Why at all :?:

Is there a DE, which can be fully exchanged by any other, not only regarding its flexibility for configuration, but also regarding the resource requirement? For the latter aspect the 2 which are qualified in the starting post as "don't see the point" cannot be replaced by one of the 2 remaining DEs. The idea to drop them would be a reduction of the power of Mint.

I don't see the meaning of the given question without discussing the above mentioned questions.
As this is a poll, there is an important 5th option missing: None. So far the poll is in itself wrong, not answerable.

Didn't vote, prefer to let Mint HQ decide such things. Seems like they try to have something for everyone. For folks that prefer lighter xfce, they have Lmde etc etc.

Just installed the cinnamon version and have to say the way Mint team config'ed it is really slick imo. LM10 was my 1st gnu/linux install, will always have a soft spot for Mint. Not sure what this rash of Mint should drop Lmde, x-de, etc is about.

As stated am happy staying out of the way and let Mint HQ handle their business, shrugs.

You don't have to drop any if you know how to multi-boot. But having four distros in one system would start to get wieldy overtime and you end up spending all your time with one or two Mint flavors. Mate is the only one I spent little time with. I'm not a fan of its menu system and I felt whatever features it had I could find it in Xfce or Cinnamon. I like Xfce a lot and never had any problem with it, but like Mate, I'm already getting what it has to offer with Cinnamon, so ended up dropping Xfce. I can't drop KDE because it's the only one that can mount internal (partitioned) drives and external ones automatically. So all in all I multi-boot KDE and 2 Cinnamon partitions (one for busy use and the other for online transactions). That's the beauty of Linux, you can add all these capable OSes any time you want and as many partitions you want. It's your machine, you can do whatever you want with it.

None. Those are all smart DE choices.

If this choice would have been offered, I would have voted for "None" too. Since it wasn't offered, I didn't vote in this poll.
