How Many 17.3 Cinnamon 32 bit Users out there?

Post by marx404 »

Just wondering how many 17.3 Cinnamon 32 bit Users out there. I am still holding on to my version as it works perfectly for me and is supported till 2019. Tried 18.1 64 bit and had cinnamon crash issues, went back to 17.3, perfect!
How many still holding onto 17.3 32 bit. Any of you too?

Still on 17.3 but 64bit here. I was tempted to go 32bit since this laptop has only 2GB RAM but the 64bit works fine. Matter of fact, I have 17.3 64bit on two (2) laptops, two (2) desktops and our HTPC (serves our entire media library throughout the house via PLEX and Rokus including movies, tv shows & music). I also plan to keep it until updates are discontinued, it just works.

Using an old trusty ASUS M2N SL1 (AMD 64 bit) board, but had stability issues running 17.1 64 bit so stayed w 32 bit, been running great since. Maybe I should try out 64 bit of 17.3?

We'll never know how many there are, but I'm one of them. I installed 32 bits because I didn't know better; some time this summer I may do a clean install of Mint 18 Cinnamon in 64-bits.

I have an old ThinkPad R61 with an Intel Core2 Duo CPU and just 2 GB DDR2 that's running 17.3 32-bit (Cinnamon). I found that the 64-bit version using up half the memory with only Thunderbird and Firefox open was a bit much so I wiped it and opted for the 32-bit version. Much better on resource usage for an old machine that's only used for Internet browsing and email. Plenty fast and stable for what it's used for.

You could, but not sure I would go to all that trouble if 32bit is working well. Unless you have some 64bit software you need to run.

Yup, posting on this message board with only one FF tab open (Discord running in background) I'm using 866MB of 1.7GB available RAM (2GB but shared with video). Fresh boot it's just over 500MB. I don't have any issues, even with multiple tabs and multiple programs open, and I've never run out of memory. This is a very low powered Asus X200CA 11.6" laptop with 1.5GHz x2 Celeron 2GB DDR3 and Ivy Bridge HD graphics with a 128GB SSD. Originally loaded with Ubuntu from Newegg so it's a Linux native.

I find 64bit Mint Cinnamon to be a very light weight DE for the most part, especially coming from Windows 7 which we still use on the home-office PC.

I have only one 32-bit Mint 17.3 install, and that's with Xfce. My Lenovo Ideapad is too low-spec'd to run Cinnamon smoothly. It runs better with Mint Xfce than with its original Windows XP, though.

Among my various Mint installs, I've found that if the machine can run Cinnamon smoothly, it's most likely 64-bit capable as well.

I guess the catalyst of this would be software such as Chrome browser that keeps nagging me ever since they stopped supporting 32 bit. I like to keep my stuff up to date if possible.

UPDATE: Since my last post, received a Chromium browser update and no longer get the nag message bar saying that my "version of Chrome is no longer supported". Nice to know many others are still using 32 bit 17.3. Chreers!

I've kept it on all three machines so far, but M18.1 has resolved some earlier problems with M18.0, so I plan to install it or 18.2 to the dual boots on a desktop (Cinn) and netbook (XFCE) near term. Will keep M17.3 on a Dell 1520 laptop (attractive machine we use in the bedroom for media and casual browsing), and will leave it so long as it works and FF and Chromium stay current. With its point releases, Mint seems to succeed in making "LTS" really mean it - I'm much more concerned with third party software support than incremental changes to the OS itself.

TRUST BUT VERIFY any advice from anybody, including me. Mint/Ubuntu user since 10.04 LTS. LM20 64 bit XFCE (Dell 1520). Dual boot LM20 XFCE / Win7 (Lenovo desktop and Acer netbook). Testing LM21.1 Cinnamon and XFCE Live for new Lenovo desktop.

I'm using it since it's release. Went from 13 to this and love it. Using an older DELL Dimension that I bought brand new about 11 or 12 years ago direct from DELL.
Did the Linux Mint switch when microsoft stopped offering security support for xp. This Linux Mint rocks. Only problem I have recently with it, is that when I download training pdf's from my industry related websites, they take forever and the computer is locked up until the download completes. Staying updated to faster mirrors doesn't seem to help much. :D

Still running 17.3 32b on an ancient laptop, Acer Travelmate 4000, with a Centrino processor 1.5GHz and 1.25GB of ram. :D
