Should Linux Mint have a Mascot?

Post by MintBean »

You know the kind of thing, a cuddly, furry mint leaf with a big smiley face and a superfluous back-story.
One week poll. Just for fun.

Tricky because I have actually argued against the idea in the appropriate thread. But, because I like anime characters and actually would LOVE a cute anime type char (not so keen on furry :? ) if she has charm and ended up as developed as Hatsune Miku has been.

I don't think it will happen but since I'm dreaming...

...a character like maybe Rikka - cute but with character and can carry a story.

Well linux mint needs a mascot. Reasons? Well linux mint is meant to be user friendly distribution. In fact linux mint can get popularity from many groups of people. Even these, who are not IT types. And this is about who we are talking.

But mint must show itself is a distro for almost everyone. And nothing gets enought attention from "normal people" than well designed mascot. We can just show logo, or green colors but it wont be appealing than an interesting mascot.

Of course mascot must look friendly, being cute is not important but mascot for mint must look friendly as much as mint. Something what can be connected to mint. You see mascot pic can wander around internet, someone will be interested in mascot, then he will try to find what this mascot is and then he will find out this is mascot representing linux mint and at this moment user will be interested with OS itself.

Tux with mint leaves is a bad idea, it will be more related with club penguin.

Well cute girl is not bad idea at all, we all know cute girls look very friendly.

Well on devianarts sometimes you can find nice mascot projects

Maybe something like that, not "lewd" but more elegant.

Elegant friendly mascot will take some attention.

We need to target non IT people because they are majority of people, and group not taken yet by other distros. And mascot is more for them not for people who are already interested in any linux.

Also linux mint can get money by selling plushies.

I'm not at all interested in having a 'cute girl' for a mascot. Especially not one of those creepy oversexualized childwomen with too-big eyes. I would very much dislike my favorite distro represented by one of those.

I would be fine with Mint being represented with a cute animal or sassy Mint leaf or what have you. I'm not sure it's useful in any way, but I don't mind.

Mascots are dumb; especially if they come along as mangas.

+1

I have no interest in that anime stuff. I had to google for 'manga' and I have no interest in that either.

You're making assertions but I'm highly doubtful they reflect reality.

He or she seems to be missing the point about the mint leaf.

How about that MS office paperclip? He isn't doing anything these days. If the Verizon guy can switch to Sprint than anything is possible eh?

Nice! :)
Apparently after the Office gig he found himself stereotyped and couldn't get any more decent work. Ended up on a zero hours contract holding two pieces of paper together.

As all Linux Mint versions get girl names, I wouldn't mind a beautiful girl with green hair as mascot.

Maybe something along these lines:

But I don't really care.

It's not an easy challenge making something which will appeal to the majority of users but I think that something nice may help people identify with Mint. Not sure how much (if any) extra attention it'd get us but it can't hurt to try.

Of course it can hurt - it can make Mint look amateur hour leading potential users to try competing systems instead.

So that's it folks- mascots are officially dumb! :D

To be honest I'm actually on the fence on this one, thought it might be interesting to see what designs people might come up with. Voted "yes" because it might result in some good ideas.
(Might just result in a load of cobblers, though).

In any case, the results are clear. :)
