New world's record! boot: < 5 sec, < 100M memory.

Post by Flemur »

My old computer just set two new world* records for booting: time and memory use.

Code: Select all

$ free -m
              total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem:           3941          92        3620           6         228        3616
Swap:          1999           0        1999
$
$ systemd-analyze
Startup finished in 3.473s (kernel) + 1.513s (userspace) = 4.986s
*world = this room.

Yeah I shoulda said - definitely nothing fancy, a low-end eMachines [et1831-07] from 2010.

Code: Select all

$ inxi -Fxz

[boots to fluxbox]

           GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 17.2.8 Direct Rendering: Yes
[using nvidia driver adds 30-50Meg to memory use at boot;
 everything works great without nvid driver]

i would install the nvidia drivers. it will add memory usage but it will also relieve your cpu process when using video demanding apps or running movies/tv

but i think DSL(damm small linux got you beat @36MB) :mrgreen: RAM usage is top right on that conky. i believe i seen even lower RAM usage which is all fine at idle but anything requiring todays browsers need a graphic driver if you want a smoother youtube and browsing.
good job BTW keeping your system low ram usage

I have done so, but not now. It's not worth the hassle, mainly about being able to login to Xfce...but I almost never do that anyway, if I need something from the xfce4 menu I just run xfce4-panel from a terminal, in fluxbox. So maybe I'll try removing lightdm again...

"blame" : 196ms lightdm.service
and uses ?? memory - every measure-method shows a different value - maybe about 1/3 or 1/2 that of an xfce4-terminal.

Without lightdm"

Code: Select all

Startup finished in 3.487s (kernel) + 1.475s (userspace) = 4.963s
$ free -m
              total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem:           3941          96        3613           6         231        3612
Swap:          1999           0        1999
The difference from the first values is, I think, smaller than the boot-to-boot-difference with lightdm.
