Let me get my boiler plate statement out of the way first, this is the real Mint 19, as the mirror hosts resync it starts showing up if you know where to look. I love to tinker with MY system and if something goes horribly wrong I just put back the 18.3 SSD. I'm a no-body in the Linux world and am a hack at this stuff. Any comments I may make are just one idiots opinion about my experience on my equipment. Now with that said let's begin.

Currently I'm rendering mode maybe because my vid card is not identified correctly (will work this out)
Every icon is different (takes a bit of getting use to)

This is installed on my HTPC so getting the Vid card correct is important (screen tearing on Netflix).
I use Kaffeine to run my dual tuners and it is odd, 4 out of the 5 icons are missing on the opening screen.
BUT at least Onboard works out of the box
The "download and upload" applet doesn't work. I use this all the time to monitor my connection speed.

With all the errors/mistakes I may have induced (trying to get things to work) I'm going to format and re-install after this post and make some new mistakes , after the reload I'll be back.

OH I put 19 Mate on my cube computer and that went with out a hitch (so far)

Reload Mint 19, didn't load anything else because I wanted to focus on "What the average person" would do in dealing with the video issue.

The 3 options the driver manager offered me was Nvidia 340, Standard xorg and Nvidia 390. the 340 put me into fall back Mode, Xorg put me in rendering mode and the 390 seemed OK but the Nvidia application (where you make adjustments) was essentially blank (a few check boxes)

With the 390 loaded I went to Netflix and had screen tearing so I'll add this to the list of all the little things I have found in the past 24 hours and post when the Beta Blog is open for comments.

Where this is a HTPC I'll stop testing 19 for now, but because Mate went so well in the cube computer I'll try it here and see if I get the same problems, I was always a Mate fan (started with mint 17) and accepted the screen tearing as normal until I tried cinnamon.

OH well that is the reason for a Beta, find the problems. I'll post back after loading and testing Mate on is computer.

Afternoon All

Loaded 19 Mate in the HTPC and it took the Nvidia 390 no problems (had full access to the set up screens)
Works great except when making fonts larger the weather app dissipaters from next to the time and I still had screen tearing on Netflix, I forgot how much I like Mate, its look and feel.

I'll tinker with it more to see if I can get the tearing to go away but I was never successful when in the Mate DE. I'll keep it on the cube computer, it works great there and I don't watch video on it.

Just installed it on my machine. No major problems but a few minor issues:
-CPU idles around 3-4% as opposed to 1-2% with Mint 18.x. This is a little annoying as it's just enough to kick my machine's fan in during this hot weather. Hope they can sort this out.
-Still get tearing with the Nvidia card - if anything worse than with 18.x. I thought the bump to x.org server 1.19 would fix it as it seemed to on Manjaro.
-The welcome screen misses one important step - activate your firewall.

Apart from that, running like a charm.

Are you ready for the strange part, My $158 cube computer from New Egg (testing as a Kiosk replacement in win 10) works flawlessly (video wise).
No screen tearing and works at a reasonable pace (go figure ), I just watched 2 episodes of 13 reasons with no tearing (I did test Mate before loading Cinnamon, it did have tearing).

Well it is 6 PM EST and time to crack the first beer and I learned my lesson many years ago about BUZZ posting so I will say "Ado" for the evening

I just installed LM 19 about an hour ago, and I have to say it seems smoother and has fewer problems (screen tearing, for example) than LM 18.3.

Usually there's issues with beta releases, but so far this seems to be as stable as any "stable" release I've... HJLKDFRP(*&#^*$&(

I still cannot believe what I'm running is a BETA release. In my experience, you'd never know it, and if anything I've found it runs better on my 2011 MBP than any of the 18.x or 17.x releases before it.

That output is not from Mint 19 though.

I'm still a bit on the fence about Mint 19/Ubuntu 18.04 since hibernation doesn't work anymore, at least not on my laptop, and I'm quite used to using it.
That aside, 19 is very stable indeed and in particular Cinnamon runs much better (although my default is MATE) and some of the annoyances I had with Mint 18 have been fixed. The team certainly did a good job.

Been running 19 (all flavours) on several machines, ever since the release of the bèta.... No serious gripes. MATE was at first somewhat rough on the edges, but the updates fixed that. Cinnamon and Xfce just keep humming along nicely, right from the start up to now.

The demise of gksu / gksudo took a bit of getting used to (its successors are of course pkexec and admin:// ). Backward compatibility with some traditional config tweaks is mostly preserved.

The biggest change for me, was the new Update Manager. By default it relies a bit too heavily on Timeshift, if you ask me. The level system, although still available, is too much hidden.

All in all: a nice release, with an excellent codebase (Ubuntu 18.04 LTS), and with -thank God- no major disruptions of the established user interfaces. Good job!

I'm about to install it to see what that's all about. I give timeshift as wide a berth as I used to give to system destroy^h restore on Windwoes.

I have found it to be very solid.

I prefer to make full disk images prior to a major update. I always review the updates to decide if I need to make an image. For me, "System restore" on a system, be it Linux or Windwoes, is anathema for me. I can't help wondering if the restore broke something; it gives me the heebie jeebies. I prefer a clean system. That said, Mint 19 doesn't tell you that you can safely disable Timeshift integration with the update manager, it just tries to force you to use it. I don't like that either.

today, though, I broke that rule with updating to the new kernel 4.13.0-45, but knowing I could boot into the previous good kernel let me do it without a lot of worry.

so, all of my 'Tests' have been within a VB, but I'm looking to replace the LM17.3
that's on a few of my PCs with LM19x series.


so far, the "extra updates" have been quite large, and I'm still wondering if the release ISO,

Linux Mint 19 has been my operating system since the Beta was released. It is only when adding those programmes that I had become accustomed to using that shortcomings became apparent. These related to the impermanence of gsettings instructions for sound in Aisleriot - fixed by adding the command string to Startup Applications and the absence of sound in "mail-notification" - fixed with a gconftool command string.

Two more items need a fix and will be worked on when next confined to quarters:
1. the mail-notification icon that appears on the panel when new mail arrives should open Thunderbird when clicked. It does not do so.
2. the wi-fi connection to my Epson scanner using Epson's Image Scan does not work but Simple Scan does.

Linux Mint 19 is a very solid and reliable release. I would not for a moment entertain the notion that Clem and the Team would release, even though in Beta, a buggy operating system. We all know that one human frailty is impatience and we all jostle to be at the forefront at the same time.

Now to Timeshift.
That should have been an option to enable or disable by the individual user. Currently its nags and intrusive integration into the Update Manager make it unpalatable.
I allowed a 150 GB partition for it and set it to weekly. Then I got a message that the partition was now full so I deleted all the snapshots, set Timeshift to monthly and again it went on its merry way and filled the partition.
Again I deleted all the snapshots to empty the partition and activated creation of a single system snapshot. After completion I turned Timeshift off.
Timeshift will mount its destination partition on your desktop but that can be avoided by creating a permanent mount point. My backup directory has a permanent mount point and is therefore targeted by Timeshift in its backup snapshot - hence the excessively large snapshots.
