Re: Nerdy types dismissing Linux Mint.
I'm tired of newbies who think their personal experience is going to be representative of what Linux users will get. The first time I installed Linux (Ubuntu) was the same, no issues. I was lucky, as you have been. Subsequent installs or updates have been different, as has the experience of many newbies. Fortunately I had enough background to know what to expect. There's no such thing as a Linux distro that "just works". You want that, buy a Mac. You want Linux, be prepared to be your own sysadmin. Any other suggestion is ignorant beginner rubbish.

Re: Nerdy types dismissing Linux Mint.
I want my OS to work for me, not me always working to fix my OS. That is why I won't use rolling releases like Arch. There are just 3 distros I stick with now: Debian Stable, MX, and Mint. Mint has always had a conservative attitude regarding their distro, and I like that. When others were chasing 'netbook interfaces', and some the ever shifting ground of Gnome, Mint stayed with traditional desktop paradigm, and was wise enough to go with LTS only releases, and even moved to Debian Stable for LMDE. There is a reason Mint is so popular
Re: Nerdy types dismissing Linux Mint.
Actually in my experience, both Mint and Manjaro come close to just working OOTB. And yes users should be prepared to be their own Sysadmin if they want use Linux.

I haven't tried MX in years so I can't really commit on that distro. But Manjaro and Mint are my first go to Distros.

I can't look past your use of "nerdy types" slang to apparently belittle and ridicule enthusiasts sharing an opinion opposite yours. Why do you have to make it personal? I feel the only one here with an elitist attitude is you. You're free to share your opinion and experience but don't call people names.whm1974 wrote: ⤴Thu Jun 14, 2018 7:34 pmAfter watch some of Joe Collins's YouTube(and others) I have notice that the more nerdy types, but not all of them have this trend of just dismissing Linux Mint out of hand for not being the latest and greatest and being focused on folks new to Linux. That holds true for many distros. Use whatever works best for you.

I'm a geek and proud of it. I don't take offense when called one, not at all. I'm sure true nerds are the same way.xenopeek wrote: ⤴Sat Jun 16, 2018 5:30 pmI can't look past your use of "nerdy types" slang to apparently belittle and ridicule enthusiasts sharing an opinion opposite yours. Something must have got lost in the translation because the expression 'nerdy types' does not convey notions of either belittlement or ridicule, nor does it convey or constitute 'name calling', rather it serves as a clear identifier of a certain type of attitude held by unnamed persons. If there is belittlement, name calling or ridicule in the phrase then I feel that you put it there, not the OP.

I for the record I do consider being called a geek or nerd to be a complement.catweazel wrote: ⤴Sat Jun 16, 2018 7:53 pmSomething must have got lost in the translation because the expression 'nerdy types' does not convey notions of either belittlement or ridicule, nor does it convey or constitute 'name calling', rather it serves as a clear identifier of a certain type of attitude held by unnamed persons. Re: Nerdy types dismissing Linux Mint.
Not a newbie anymore, but no where close to being a nerd with Linux.
I have to keep notes and refer to my notebook to make things work right the "first time".
But, after trying a lot of distros, I chose Mint Cinnamon simply because I wanted an OS that used the same set of keyboard and mouse commands as what I was already used to, from too many years of being forced to use Windows by my employers.
I just want a daily driver that works every time I turn it on. I have two experimental laptops to mess with, so that I can learn more....
but, I think that Mint is the perfect OS for an OOTB install that will just work, and let folks surf the net, write some letters home to mom, and watch a decent DVD movie rented from Red Box without having to figure out what is a PPA and HTH do you make this work?
Last night, I pulled out my 3rd backup laptop to watch a DVD Red Box movie for the first time, 1,000 miles from home, it was the only laptop I own with an Optical drive builtin... the others are the "thin mint" type laptops, fast but no frills.
this 3rd in line box is on Mate because it can't handle Cinnamon, not enough resources.... but it worked the first time driving a HDMI cable to a new Samsung 34" TV Monitor from Wal-mart, and the "The Commuter" got his man, and found a new job to replace the one he got fired from.
We are on vacation in our travel trailer enjoying the mountains of Colorado....
Mint to the rescue!

Re: Nerdy types dismissing Linux Mint.
On my last trip to Indonesia (January this year), I didn't take any electronics other than my phone. My kids couldn't believe that I didn't take at least a laptop. I'm not taking a computer on the trip there next month either. I expect the kids will have me committed to an insane asylum on my return

Re: Nerdy types dismissing Linux Mint.
not a nerd here, far from it. there are two types of linux users.
1: the linux user that clicked [Next] [Next] [Next] when installing
2: the linux user that clicked [Do Something else]
user 1 may have issues when linux won't boot
user 2 may have issues when linux won't boot, but has enough learning experience to know where to start.
ps: that said. linux needs to quit changing things around at that moment when a user thinks they understand a software.

Using that to refer to people that have an opinion one strongly disagrees with comes across to me as having been meant as an insult.

Whereas if someone were to call me a nerd, I wouldn't be insulted.xenopeek wrote: ⤴Sun Jun 17, 2018 2:06 am http://www.dictionary.com/browse/nerd

An individual who:
1. Enjoys learning
2. Does not adhere to social norms
That more accurately conveys the meaning than does dictionary.com. One needs to be careful not to inject one's own prejudices into someone else's words.

LOL! All I can think about reading this thread is Arch, The "Arch Way" and the people at Arch! Geeze Louise, talk about a group of elitists!whm1974 wrote: ⤴Thu Jun 14, 2018 7:34 pm After watch some of Joe Collins's YouTube(and others) I have notice that the more nerdy types, but not all of them have this trend of just dismissing Linux Mint out of hand for not being the latest and greatest and being focused on folks new to Linux. While I'm using Manjaro now, I have used Mint in the past before and didn't have much issue with the Distro. Mainly due to having to mess with PPAs in order to get Netflix and Amazon Video working, but now that just works OOTB now.

Both Linux Mint and Manjaro have the strong advantage of getting a computer up and running and working OOTB as is, without any hassle.
I came back to Mint after 4 years with Arch because I needed something STABLE to use for business. Arch is a good hobby, but for every day nuts and bolts I needed something stable.
I haven't even touched my Arch install for weeks.
Many, many times on this forum I have said "Mint is too easy."

Re: Nerdy types dismissing Linux Mint.
PS: My hat is off to the Mint team.
Thank you for a very nice, easy to use, and complete operating system. In my former life I have been an "Operating Systems Specialist" at Helpdesks at two Fortune 500 companies, and I am completely happy with the Mint implementation of Linux.
I don't even have to think. Well, not too often.
With MATE, I can have my familiar "Windows '95" Interface, with a nice stable operating system.
I supported 3 versions of Windows and Novell (we're talking a minute or two ago) and enjoy stable Operating System, and Mint has sure provided that.
Keep up the good work!
