4.16 Kernel

Post by KBD47 » Sat Jul 14, 2018 6:55 pm

What a shame Ubuntu 18.04 and Mint 19 did not ship with the 4.16 kernel. It might have saved lots of grief.

I'm using 4.16 on Debian Stable through backports. I hope LMDE will come with the 4.16 kernel by default.

Mainline 4.15 kernel EOL has nothing to do with Ubuntu's 4.15 kernel series though, the latter receiving 5 years of LTS support.
Mainline 4.16 kernel reached EOL last month btw.

4.16 is supported by Debian:

Ubuntu has it's own kernel support, which is why there was a mess with 4.15.24
It is too bad Ubuntu did not release with 4.16 kernel as it came out close to the release of 18.04.
Hopefully Mint has the 4.16 kernel with LMDE as it is in Debian Stable backports and has lots of security fixes.

Yes, I know, but you linked an article about mainline EOL, that's why I pointed it out.

I don't know what LMDE will release with but if it's in the repo it's an easy switch no matter what.

Ubuntu 18.10 will come with the 4.17 by the way. I like the 4.17 series a lot for the power management improvements, it's quite noticeable on my laptop. Although I'm currently on a pre-release 4.18 because it fixes some other things that had been bugging me (pun intended )

I mainly posted the link to show it was available at the time of Ubuntu 18.04 release.
I'd still like to know what Ubuntu did to the 4.15.24 kernel.
I'm generally cautious about kernel updates, especially in light of the 4.15.24 fiasco, but hopefully upcoming kernel releases will improve things for main Mint.
