[SOLVED] Upgrade from 18.3 Cinnamon to 19 Xfce

Post by JerryF »

Hi all,

Well, I took the plunge with my laptop. I first backed up everything using Timeshift, Aptik, and Grsync.

I went from 18.3 Cinnamon to 19 Xfce by performing a fresh install. I created a new partition to hold 19's / partition and assigned 18.3's /home partition to 19. That seemed to go well. All my documents, etc. are fine.

Hiccups along the way (so far):
  • Google Chrome and Chromium kept asking me for a keyring password. Finally got that resolved by deleting the .google-chrome and .chromium (sp?) directories.
  • Shutter won't capture pics (which I installed from scratch).
  • Back to square one with Bluetooth---won't stay connected to devices. This had to be tweaked in 18.3 to get it to work.
  • Can't connect to our desktop computer's hard drive that's on the same network. This also had to be tweaked in 18.3 to get it to work.
  • Windows don't always maximize when I click on the maximize button.
Overall though, 19 Xfce seems good. I'll be tackling these issues in the next couple of weeks.

Blue tooth was one of the things 19.0 solved for me. Now it connects like a dream. I'd be interested to know though, why did you swap from Cinammon to XFCE?

If Shutter just won't work for you, try out xfce4-screenshooter. I've got the launcher in my panel, makes things quite easy.

The deal breaker for me on 19 xfce was I didn't have the money to lease a Lear Jet to follow the cursor/mouse movement around. Has that been fixed?

Hi, sorry for the delay. Been reinstalling 19 and had to get new Android tablet set up.

I've been toying with Xfce some time now and find it a little more responsive than Cinnamon for my HP EliteBook.

A complete reinstall fixed everything!

Hi Richy,

Sorry for the delayed response. I did a complete reinstallation of 19. Also had to get new Android tablet set up.

Everything is working, except Bluetooth connection. Will work on that.

I haven't had a problem with that.

did you have to mess with the /home partition in the new reinstall, or did it stay right where it was?

I always worry about messing up my data..

eh eh. Yeh, I tried cinnamon a few times in the past but felt it had more gimmicks than I needed (I usually remove many windows effects). I feel like I'd like to use XFCE, but that seemed too sparse, so I have pretty much ended up with Mate, which to me has the right balance of useability and simplicity... but you are tempting me to try XFCE again.

Hi AZgl1500,

I created a new /home partition (just as you would when doing a fresh install).

I then copied files and folders judiciously (like .thunderbird which kept all my settings) and recreated some settings in other apps.

That way, I could keep the installation as fresh as possible.

I've had Cinnamon since 17.1 up to 18.3 and it's been fine on my laptop. I just felt that if I'm going to keep that old HP EliteBook, I'd switch to Xfce for a snappier response.

I have tried Mate and for some reason was my least favorite. Just a personal thing.

Nope the mouse settings is still broke.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1758023

Code: Select all

xinput set-prop "Logitech USB Optical Mouse" "libinput Accel Speed" -0.6
This slows it down though, just need to get it to load on startup now somehow.

I see what you mean with that link. I don't use a mouse, only the laptop's touchpad and haven't had a problem.

Plus if you use thunar as root to edit a file or whatever a root would need 19 doesn't open as root. Compare ~/.config/thunar/uca.xml to mine on 18.3. The 2nd action "open as root" seems to be missing in 19.

The reason it is not in 19 is because they have retired gksudo. Much scrambling around with; admin this, pkexec that . . it IS a mess ! (not only in Xfce) :(

Patience is definitely a virtue in linux.
