Problems with Ethernet connectivity

Could somebody shed some light on this for me please. I seem to notice a lot of posts where people struggle with connecting their laptop/desktop to the ethernet but I see only a small number of solutions (and hardly any of them seem to work). Have I picked the wrong OS or are there things at play I don't know yet???

The problems I see aren't about ethernet per se, but misconfigured networking.

Ok sounds like it make sense. Which solution would you suggest for a laptop which "forgot" how to connect to the internet router via cable?

That depends on the problem. If you're having an issue, please post the output of this terminal command:

Sorry for the delay i'm doing a couple of things at the same time

...and ok this is now clutching straws but i noticed my laptop is working on 18.2 version. If i try and upgrade this to 18.3 would this perhaps solve this issue?

Urgggh. You have three choices:

1) See this article. Scroll down to the heading Update: Jan 24th 2018 and follow the instructions carefully. At step 7. Check whether the driver is loaded properly you'll need to use ifconfig to get the linux name of the ethernet adapter. The article uses enp3s0f1. You need to replace enp3s0f1 with the name that ifconfig gives you; it may or may not be the same.

2) Stick with wifi.
3) Scream.

Unfortunately, your hardware is rather long in the tooth and if the above 1) doesn't work it might be time to consider your options.

And that was where my problems really started. I can see the tab in the list for the Network connections but as soon as i click on it it just doesn't do anything. I can do all the usual stuff like editing it etc but it just does not establish a wired connection


and as far as option 2) is concerned: please don't. I caught enough radiation in my life

Ok as a long shot today i upgraded to Mint 18. 3 and still have the same problem. Any ideas how to go from here??
