Speed of my boot compared to live session

Just really for info...
My boot in on i5 processor dell laptop, mint 19 takes about 2 mins now! Is this the new linux kernel? When I boot into USB live session of same version (same ISO) it is much quicker, also speed of operation from USB is pretty fantastic. What takes my desktop HD so long??? I know live USB boots into memory, but I also thought had to check hardware each time, so why so much faster on boot in from USB??

Just a guess, but I think your hard drive may be experiencing bad blocks, and also as Dell is typically done in older days, it is a slow HDD anyway.

I installed a new 7200 RPM HDD in a 10 year old Acer laptop, and was amazed at the difference that made.
No actual time numbers, but it dropped an agonizingly slow ( ala watching Windows 7 come up ) to a very quick ( okay, let's go play ) situation.

SSDs are now getting low enough in price, $65-$85, that you should think about upgrading the Dell to SSD.
I did that with my 6 year old Dell laptop and it boots up fast now, like 25 to 27 seconds in a timed series of bootups.

I have fanless minipc with ssd and 16GB RAM but left it back in UK.. I need to get family member to bring it to me when they visit. It is super fast (18.3 still on it).

I live in very different economy now, so $65 is like a quarter of my salary :lol: :lol:

I am using ext2 on bootable USB (computer is ext4), but really, you'd think a linux install would be so much faster cos it had already detected your hardware (I tried 'profile' in grub, but didn't seem to make any difference).

I guess it doesn't bother me too much as I am an obsessive tea drinker, and usually put on a brew as booting up :lol:

You can use the output of systemd-analyze, systemd-analyze blame and dmesg to troubleshoot what if anything is stalling boot.

+1 on an SSD - I upgraded my laptop drive to SSD a few weeks ago - the difference is night and day. This is a Intel Core i5-2430M system - about 6 years old. I'm on the desktop within 30 seconds from hitting the power button including typing my password in the log-in screen.

im using a core i5-4460 cpu, with an old 500 gb WD spinner HD, with 8 gb corsair vengence ram...my systemd-analyze and blame as follows...i dont think i can get it much faster than this...DAMIEN

Thanks smurphos and Damien. I checked out systemd-analyse blame but seems lots of processes are slow :lol:
The SSDs of you and damien certainly seem fast. What file systems are you using with your SSD? I'd love f2ns but I gather not supported for install of mint yet. May need to change soon cos price of SSD is dropping and eventually I expect will overtake HD for home use.

mine is NOT an SSD...mine is the old fashioned platter/spinner type of hard drive...very mechanical...lol...if you have never done so yet, post the results of your systemd-analyze blame...we may be able to advise how to shave off a little boot up time...DAMIEN

Mine is formated in regular ext4 - a 250GB Crucial branded drive cost me £30 sterling on sale + £5 for a USB enclosure for the drive it was replacing. Best £35 I've spent in a long time.

Apparently, you have blocked or removed a lot of stuff, and most likely are NOT running Cinnamon, which I am.

and,
while on the subject of bootup speed.

Do I assume correctly that the Grub Menu is not part of this process,
that the timing of the bootup process only starts AFTER an OS has been selected and <enter> key pressed, or it times out and boots up.

I have 18.3 and LMDE3 on the SSD, so the Grub menu must appear for me.

hi azg...you are correct that i do not run cinnamon, im using the xfce 18.04 instead (your using xenial 16.04), sorry love cinnamon look, hate cinnamon lag and crash problems...also have either disabled or purged things not necessary, at least for me...since i do not use samba, it has been purged which also eliminates nmbd.service and smbd.service...also NetworkManager-wait-online.service is unnecessary on boot up so this too is disabled, lvm2-monitor.service i also do not have since i do not even use it, apport service is also purged since it does not fix anything, just a way to report things to developers, and there are others as well, but i think ive done well with an old "spinner" that holds its own with SSDs...after bootup, everything works in a flash or a blink of an eye...it should also be noted that i keep absolutely nothing except the OS on the hard drive...everything else is on USBs no matter what...DAMIEN

I would appreciate knowing more about getting rid of that stuff, did you compile your kernel then, or delete things out of it after the fact?

Been meaning to comment on your being in Alamagordo, love that area, lived in Hobbs 2 years, and Edgewood 10 years... while working on a Shell Pipeline company CO2 gas line that ran from Cortez, CO down to Denver City, TX.

it is interesting to note, that I have tried many times to disable Network Manager service,
and it never, ever, works. That is costing almost 8 seconds worth of bootup time, might well go brew up a cup of tea. :lol:

Impressive. If you have any tips, would be good, but kept this as chat to keep it informal and not specifically a 'problem' but any little extra you can advise me to do is really appreciated.

PS. When I took off quiet splash I noticed pauses for.long time on 'checking for btrfs'. I don't use btrfs at all, so maybe unecessary.

Extracted from your dmesg output - this 32 second timegap is suspect -you are right with identifying the checking for btrfs as the issue. Now to work out why it's doing that and how to stop it. :roll: :wink:

Before trying that drastic step it would be interesting to know how long it takes your system to run this command and any error messages produced.

sudo btrfs device scan

Also report back output of lsblk -o "NAME,MAJ:MIN,RM,SIZE,RO,FSTYPE,MOUNTPOINT,UUID" I'm intrigued by what dev/dm-0 might be on your system.
