I accidentally pressed 'Crtl+s' to save a document, but I was on desktop, and it asked if I wanted to select a file based on keywords. I have never noticed that in all my years of Linux Mint (Mate). A useful function if you're in the file explorer or on desktop.
Have there been any functions in mint, or associated popular software, that have been around a while (not sure if this has or not?!) and you only discovered a long time afterwards??? Maybe we can share some of those.

The MATE desktop is provided by Caja, so the usual Caja keyboard shortcuts like the one you mentioned continue to work. There are others, e.g. Ctrl+F for the search tool.
