What happened? Site was GONE.

Post by MurphCID »

What happened? The site was gone almost all day today. Same thing for Linux Mint site. I kept getting this: Unsupported protocol
The client and server don't support a common SSL protocol version or cipher suite.

When I go to the Linux Mint site I get a blank page and nothing else. What is going on, are we under attack?

I can't reproduce that. The Linux Mint site and forum are both up for me, as normal.

The main page https://www.linuxmint.com/ gives me SSL_ERROR_NO_CYPHER_OVERLAP
The main page http://www.linuxmint.com/ remains empty, no error message.
The packages page http://packages.linuxmint.com/ displays its content, but with a minimal layout.
The release page https://www.linuxmint.com/download_all.php comes up and looks as always.
The same is true for the forum.
This looks like a technical problem, affecting a part of the Linux Mint websites, but not all of them.

As I have not changed my Firefox during the past few days (since last version update), do not try to tell me the issues were caused by Firefox.
I'll ask back: why then did it start on Monday, not before?

it's obviously on-line over here:
:?

when this sort of issue happens for you, then check this site :
https://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/
where you can plug in the Name of the Web Site that you cannot get to. .. .

as my MBB can be somewhat flaky, & it's a site that I've used on an irregular basis.

1: https://www.linuxmint.com/
2: http://www.linuxmint.com/

for me 1 is: This site can’t provide a secure connection uses an unsupported protocol.
ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH

for me 2 is: blank

what works is just typing linuxmint.com or https://linuxmint.com/

The longer we don't get some sort of announcement of what's going on, the more worried I'm becoming (I've clicked on all those links). :?

Some sort of DNS hijack maybe - https://www.linuxmint.com/ is resolving to some random swedish IP - 93.90.146.101

https://linuxmint.com/ is resolving to 192.124.249.9 - sucuri.net as it should.

This is with Google DNS 8.8.4.4 and Chrome.

Edit to add - deleting the DNS entry and then re-adding it in network connection solves the issue for me. All links resolve correctly.

Occasionally when I try to login I get an error window which says that Origin is blocking the site. If I disable the add-on uBlock Origin I can login and there is no difficulty if I then enable it. Why this doesn't happen every time, I have no idea. So, why should it happen at all?

I'm having trouble with it too.

I reinstalled 17.3 on one drive and I get nothing. When I try https:// I either get a bad certificate, or I get the server in Sweden. If I use Chrome I get the https: version. On Mint 19 I get a white page with no style at all.

One thing I would suggest, create a partition as a 50G partition as /. Partition the rest as /Home. IF the system fails, reinstall and use the exact same username and all your 'stuff' comes back to you.

also get the same result(s) from here, as well.
- the community site is up : https://community.linuxmint.com/

it's something to do with the issue at Sucuri CDN end,
- They have servers all over the world and some regions were/are having issues ..

EDIT: Anything with www or www.forums is a DNS issue. Our registrar is moving us to a new interface.
- Should resolve itself.

Same thing for Linux Mint site. I kept getting this: Unsupported protocol
Happened to me last night, couldn't access the forum on my tablet (never given problems before), but it was working okay on my phone - both android. Haven't checked today, but obviously working fine on my laptop (chromium) or I wouldn't be able to send this. I put it down to something that google had done with chrome, maybe tablet a later version? But suspect not as the problem is wider than me.

EDIT - just checked the tablet and it is now connecting to the forum. Whatever the problem was, it is now fixed, But it would be nice to know what the problem was?

Both have loaded properly this morning on Chrome on my Windows system as I drink my morning cups of wake up. It is funny, in addition to this fine site, YouTube and some news sites had issues yesterday. I am not really sure what was going on, but I am glad it is fixed.
