will Linux Mint ever be in the top 100

Post by tinca »

I read recently that Mint has some 700,000 users. That’s an impressive number, and Mint is one of the most popular and used Linux system, so why the question.

Team Linux Mint is a team that is running the “FOLDING AT HOME” program from “Stanford University of America”.

They are trying, with the help of many computers to try and find a cure for Cancer, Alzheimer’s etc. As cancer has seriously effected my own personal family I felt somewhat duty bound to help with the cause if possible.

If you go viewtopic.php?f=58&t=243792&hilit=folding+at+home you can find the original thread. Have a read and see if you can give us a hand. Currently we are rated at 111 team out of a possibly 224,000? teams. We are still going up mainly due to the contribution of “battlenut”. My personal dream would be to get Team Linux Mint into the top 100 teams.

Our team at this moment consists of just 7 people, so the question I asked “can we ever get into the top 100”, is maybe, but we certainly need more people to join out of our vast user base to really make some progress.

Have a look at this video to give some idea of what it all means. But do not join his team, join our one. Our team is Team Linux Mint and our number is 76140.

Apart from the good cause, it is a great way to keep the name of Linux Mint prominent.

Best regards Keith

I would really like to do this - like I guess most folks I to have lost someone close, my brother, to cancer. I have downloaded the .deb packages but they all fail to install - somehow I can see the viewer but I cannot configure FAH all the fields are empty. Any suggestions on how to get this working?

hi majorpooper,

thank you for the offer of help.

Since reading your above reply I have been searching my 6 hard drives to see if I could find how I installed the folding programme, I cannot find anything about installing.

I have just fired up my wife's computer and went to Stanford's site and downloaded 2 files. Fahclient 7.5.1 amd64 deb and also Fahcontrol 7.5.1-1 all deb.

I downloaded the Fahcontrol first. It takes a couple of minutes to download and then a dialogue box opens and you have the option to install. It downloads a few more bits and says that it is complete.

I next clicked on the Fahclient and it opened and downloaded files. Again a dialogue box opened and in the top right hand corner is the option to install. You are then prompted to fill in the fields.

Insert your name, our team number is 76140,the team is Team Linux Mint, you do not have a password at this stage, as you have to have run 10 work units to get one, but once you have it it earns you more points. It then says the installation is complete so at that point I left the Stanford site.

In the main menu under Education you will find the Fahcontrol, just start it and you will find that it is already folding.

Hope this helps

Keith.

a thought, perhaps you disconnected from Standford a bit to soon.
