LM 19.2 and WINE / PlayOnLinux / etc...

Post by Portreve » Tue Sep 03, 2019 9:33 am

Over the holiday weekend, I thought I'd try setting up Diablo II because I want to play it (duh!) but also to see if whatever the issue(s) plaguing WINE, et al, had been resolved.

While I was able to install POL, and through it WINE, I could not get WINE to launch. It would do nothing but crash. Ergo, I could never install anything (Diablo II, or actually my real favorite, Diablo I).

Given that the only reason I have for ever using WINE is to binge one every year or two on a couple classic games (which, ironically enough, I never ran on Windows itself, but on Mac OS back in the 90s) it's not exactly an Earth-shattering thing that WINE didn't seem to work any longer in LM, but I would assume this is likely to be a problem for the computer using community at large because others will surely have more demanding or more exotic needs than I.

Perhaps, you didn't succeed because the preferred way to install Wine in Mint is through wine-installer package. Though, even that way might not be quite straightforward as depicted in this thread, it still looks easy enough.

Cheers.

Hello,
I found same thing, but I am not sure, if it is wine issue, mint issue or POL issue.

Short description:
Wine version older than 2.8 (2.7 and older) installed via POL always fails (some type of GUI issue) - only x86 wine tested on amd64 mint with xfce.

Long description:
1, User starts installation on POL
2, POL checks assigned wine versions
3, If specific version is not isntalled, POL downloads it to itself
4, POL prepares directory and asks user for path to installer
5, Once installer is obtained, its executed in specified wine
6, Wine older than 2.8 fails (2.7 and older)
7, Because wine fails, installation fails too.

On this picture, one artefact is wine and second is mono installer.
https://i.postimg.cc/QNY1X0QX/oldWine.png

Tested winecfg on these versions:
1.6.2 - fail
4.0 - works
3.0 - works
2.0 - fail
2.22 - works
2.11 - works
2.6 - fail
2.8 - works
2.7 - fail
2.8 staging - works
2.7 staging - fail

Everything is x86 on amd64 system

Tried to inform POL community first, but without success. https://www.playonlinux.com/en/topic-16681.html#m64782

Basically they never fixed the same problems from years ago.

On one hand most of the POL scripts are outdated

On the other hand there is something seriously wrong with their wine packages

Guess they figured it's a waste of time to fix and are focusing all their energies on POL 5..... whenever that actually comes out.

If you've got Steam just enable Steam Play (Proton) and play through that, no need for WINE/PlayOnLinux.

Speaking of Portreve's favorite Diablo I, as his sole reason for meddling with Wine, there seems to be yet another way, not requiring the use of Wine - a non-official Linux port.

Could be worth a try, if he feels adventurous...

How does one do that? I have absolutely no experience with Steam.

That's why I said if you've got Steam. If you're not already using it then there's no reason to do so just for a non-Steam game. Diablo II should work out of the box with Wine 4: https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager. ... ion&iId=74, so remove everything Wine and POL you've got installed, then install wine-installer and you should be fine.

Oh, ok. I'll give that a try tomorrow after work.

Can I deduce then that Steam either installs or contains an equivalent to Wine?

Yes, Steam Play is a feature that leverages a Valve's Proton technology, which at its core integrates Wine. Since I am using Steam, anyway, I also use Proton to run some Windows tools that I still need, I have not had a separate Wine install in a long time. But since you do not use Steam there's no point in you doing the same.

Ultimately, Diablo II crashes and quits, and all that happens is my screen goes to black, then drops to a very low resolution which I can only fix by opening and then closing my laptop's lid. Even telling Wine to use a fixed virtual desktop instead of the entire desktop does nothing. I don't remember if the last time I tried this I was running Mint 18.3 or 19.0, but clearly there's an issue and I don't have the vaguest clue how to troubleshoot it. Also: is it actually worth the effort?

Did you check the instructions on the appdb link I gave? And whether it's worth it for you is a question only you can answer. ;)

You can just dual boot or run the thing in a Windows VM.

Or try a new game of the same genre - ever played Path of Exile?

Now why the heck should I do THAT?!?

Sometimes it takes me twice to realize the correct solution has been given.

Thank you very much, gm10!

Setting aside my unwillingness to run Windows on my own hardware, this presupposes I actually have a copy of Windows to use.

Objection, Your Honor. Assumes facts not in evidence.

Never heard of it. I guess I'll have to JFGI now, won't I?

Path of Exile:

Two issues:

All I've got is an Intel i915 integrated graphics chipset. So, yeah... I doubt it.

Could this then be run within Steam's implementation of Wine?

Actually, I'm not so much for the newest generation of these sorts of games. I would rather play Diablo I than Diablo II, but getting D1 to work is kind of hit-or-miss (at least in my experience) so that's why I will settle for D2.

Yes, it runs fine via Proton, but if your hardware doesn't handle it then maybe not. This one has a native Linux version but isn't free: https://www.torchlight2.com/en

Once I applied the 1.14b update for Diablo II, it works perfectly. Diablo I... not so much, even after applying the 1.09 update. C'est la vie.
