A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.... At least Mint doesn't use the silly animal names that Ubuntu does.

Give the guy a break.... He's doing a good job from which many people, including I, benefit every day.

I don't understand why names are thought to be required. "Mint 19.3" is already a unique identifier so adding a name is superfluous.

You need some sort of release code name for Debian packaging/repositories.

What is the source for this nickname?
The September blog does not mention it. Unless the Firefox 69.0.2 search function is broken.
So for the moment I consider LM 19.3 Trina to be a bad joke.

"tina" at least would make me smile, reminding me of this TV commercial: Tina, wat kosten die Kondome? (Tina, how much are the condoms?)
"trina", however, would make me grind my teeth at best.

Katharina / Katrin

Trina / Trine is often used as nickname for Katharina in Switzerland

Also in Dutch, it's an abbreviation of Catharina/Katrien. It's only used in a slighting way: "boerentrien", i.e. "farmer's trien", i.e. an uncivilized girl.

No offense intended towards the farmers (Dutch or otherwise).... It's simply the meaning of the word.

The source which gm10 has given is what I had in mind when asking.
As a native German speaker I am aware that "Trina" is a short form of "Katharina". Does not mean that I like it.
Tracy - Trisha - Trixi e.g. are more compatible with my ears than Trina is. The more so, because visually it is too similar to tina.
Too late for a change I guess.

How about Tabitha (Tabatha) or Teresa? I know that Tessa is somewhat of a nickname for Teresa but Tess is a more proper diminutive for Teresa. There is also Twyla.

I'm just waiting to see what names will be used for Mint versions 23 and 25.

There is also Twyla, or Tanya.

Mint's codenames are have been alphabetical within series to date since 18, so assuming that is now convention we need something after Tin...

Tilly, Tricia, Tracy, Trixi, Tulisa.......

Shall we send Clem a link to https://www.babycentre.co.uk/baby-names-finder

Perhaps there is a certain sentiment involved in the naming here.
Perhaps an old girlfriend, or perhaps the wife of a certain dev?
If it were my wife then the name would be 'plaintiff'

I'm not. It's going to cause mass confusion for newcomers. Even blind Freddy could see that.

Seriously, I guess we should have handed in our more or less constructive suggestions on which nickname Mint 19.3 could have some months earlier, right after "tina" had been released. You snooze, you lose. We have missed the timeslot. :(
So we should start compiling lists of female names starting with "U" now.

Perhaps, but that doesn't mean the devs mightn't change their minds.... After all, there's no technical reason to stick to it yet.

Anyway: I don't really care. It's not a big problem; not even a small problem. It's so insignificant that it probably can't be called a problem at all.

The nickname has public visibility. Means it will appear in the articles about Linux Mint 19.3, inside the text bodies as well as in the titles.
So a well chosen nickname has got some marketing aspect, even though it may just be a small factor.
After all the content will be more important than the label which you attach to it.
Of course, I am aware that it will be impossible to find a nickname, which will please everybody.
