Random Freezes Again

Post by aambumann »

Well I hated to do it but had to install a different flavor of Linux today ( MXLinux ). I installed Mint on a new build 1 year ago. I chose to use AMD Ryzen3 2200G in the build. For what ever reason Mint and Ryzen did not play well together, or at least I believe that it had something to do with those 2 things. I had constant random freezes numerous times everyday, where the desktop and cursor would freeze. Had to do a hard restart with the power button to resolve the freeze. I admit, I do not know a whole lot about Linux, but I researched and had chats with many who do and could not solve the issue, so it became time to change. I made the change today and have not had any issues at all today after the change. It's a shame, I really liked Mint but being a new user, I needed something that just worked. Hopefully this issue will be resolved soon.

AMD Ryzen CPU's require kernel 5.0.x or newer. Did you try one of those kernels?
Update Manager - panel: View - Linux kernels

Furthermore, these workarounds should help (if still needed with kernel 5.0.x):
https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... .html#ID27

... but I think the final fix for Ryzen will probably be kernel 5.3.x, which should become available shortly through the official channels.

I bought a new PC last week with an AMD A6-9225 CPU (Stoney Ridge). For me, kernel 5.0.x did the trick, coupled with the latest upstream microcode:
http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/no ... _amd64.deb

Tried kernel 5.3.x as well, by means of the Canonical Kernel Team PPA. But that prevented the use of the amdgpu video driver, so I had to revert to the official 5.0.x. Which proved to be no loss.

Did you ever try Pjotr's advice he gave you, back in May?

Feedback from user with Athlon 200GE (Raven Ridge APU): Thanks @Pjotr, updating the AMD firmware helped. I had no freeze since.

I completely forgot about Pjotr's advice. Went back in to day and followed his advice. Was unable to find PSU idle control in bios. Updated kernal to 5.3 today as well. Hopefully this will help. Besides the freezes, sometimes my sound would would become scratchy, almost like the sound you get with blown speakers. So maybe this will help that as well. Will let you know. Thanks for the help.

Well everything was going good with no random freezes since Oct. 27th, until today. While browsing with Firefox I had a freeze and could not recover without pressing the reset button on the computer. The cursor was able to still move, but seemed like the keyboard might have been frozen as well as the desktop. I have included part of a log if this helps. http://dpaste.com/3RAFXNB

Did you also install the latest upstream microcode for AMD? And did you update your BIOS?

No. Do not know what upstream microcode is or how to install. Have not updated BIOS. Will look into it. Thank You.

Will have to wait and see, but moving in the right direction. Went from multiple daily freezes in the beginning to only 1 in the last 2 weeks. Will keep you posted. Thank You for your help.

After BIOS update and following your list of 10 essential things to do, cannot boot live usb. Was having problems with Pix, and connectiong iPhone so just was going to do fresh install, but now unable to. I can still boot to mint normally. When I try to boot live USB it starts fine but then gives me message "Unable to write to IOMMU perf counter", then screen goes black and hangs. As far as Pix goes, it quit working, so I tried to uninstall and reinstall from software manager but it will not reinstall correctly. Logs - http://dpaste.com/0T64681

Cannot shake this bug, another random freeze. It happens much less now, but still there. While scrolling through FB using the wheel on wireless mouse, the screen froze but cursor still worked. I have attached 2 logs, part1 is from time pc turned on until freeze, and part 2 is from time of freeze forward. Any Thoughts? Thank You. http://dpaste.com/15BSY8C and http://dpaste.com/0ZDXQM7 System info http://dpaste.com/28W5QX7

my issue with ryzen3 and onboard vega graphics is not random freezes but random crashes that send me to the login screen. IMPORTANT i've learned to not touch anything while updating kernels. last time the system snapped right back to the login as it was updating initramfs after kernel upgrade and yup kernel panic at boot. on my end it can be triggered by numerous actions, maybe rightclick in text editor, or open qbittorrent, or edit in shutter. i'm sure they have things in common but i've given up since i believe it's a GUI error of cinnamon desktop

BTW i use kernel 4.15 (updated) with no issues and also kernel 5.0 and now 5.4, no issues other than the crash to login screen

   WHY: why do i have crash dumps here and no one told me? great not only it crashes but now it's using my SSD when i don't want it to for some backups i never knew existed. i have to constantly check and delete these. so sick of logs

LOL - check here as-well if you want to raise your blood pressure further - /var/lib/systemd/coredump

I've already raised a bug report - https://github.com/linuxmint/mintreport/issues/31

Anyway if you want to solve your crashes you could always use your crash reports to raise an issue. That's generally how things get fixed...

I don't have a /var/crash folder by the wey. What was the date stamp on those files?
