About upgrading Mint from previous version to newer...

Just curious whether the upgrade process automatically deletes files that are no longer useful.
Would be glad if they are as they just take space and makes the whole system too large to handle.

Not all of us have free time to start from scratch all over again.
Would rather do the upgrade.

Yes, it does remove superceded packages, but it doesn't update the kernel (the Ubuntu base doesn't either). This is reasonable because newer kernels can break things on some (usually old) hardware. There's usually no problen with that but once after a minor point release upgrade my wireless didn't work properly anymore. Updating the kernel to the one that shipped with the iso fixed that. I wouldn't worry about it.
