[SOLVED] Can't install Mint over Manjaro installation, recgnizes EXT 4 as EXT 2

Post by Arch_Enemy »

I tried to post an error to the blog. It told me I was unauthorized!

I spent TWELVE HOURS trying to load Mint 19, 19.1 or 19.2 on to a munged Manjaro installation

It would NOT recognize a non-journalized EXT4 partition (/home) as EXT4. Kept insisting it was EXT2. When I tried to flag it as EXT2, it said, "Unable to mount partition to /home". When I identified it as EXT4, it INSISTED on formatting it!

I finally gave up and installed Mint 17.3, which FINALLY recognized the partition as EXT4, and installed just fine, retaining my data.

When I tried to relate my woes to the blog, it told me I was "unauthorized" and fed me a line of bunk.

Believe me, after more than 12 hours, this was NOT what I wanted to see!

Needless to say, at 3:50AM, I am NOT a Happy Camper!

Does anyone have a solution to make the installer see it as EXT4?

One thing I would suggest, create a partition a ~28G partition as /. Partition the rest as /Home.
When the system fails, reinstall and use the exact same username and all your 'stuff' comes back to you.

And you never bothered to ask a question?

There comes a point when you have to move on and just nuke-n-pave a drive and start over from scratch.

You've completely borked your system from not knowing what the hell you're doing, don't blame Mint or any other Linux distro. Just do a clean reinstall.

Doesn't care about his data all that much and thought FAT was the best file system ever and is still bummed it cannot be used for a home folder?

Well, about that time I had torn what little of my hair I had left out by the roots, and when I tried to post a bug issue on the blog it wouldn't let me do so.

OK: How can I make Mint 19.0 recognize an EXT4 non-journalised file system, as EXT4, without forcing a format?

While I was installing upgrades to 17.3 I poked around here and got a real kick out of this one!

Really...when I finally gave up at 4:45 AM I laid down and thought, "If I had posted that on the ARCH forum I'd have been ROASTED! The folks at Mint won't do that."

And you didn't. :D

I would have just performed a clean install. Twenty minutes total and then your done.
Here's the deal: I had a Manjaro install that I "locked" in place, because everything was working pretty much the way I wanted. When I tried to add a couple of FireFox enhancements, it was a no-go, and it has been SO long since an update with some custom software (nVidia CUDA and FFMPEG) it wouldn't update.

I had been planning to switch it to Mint already anyway, for a while. Yeah, I know, incompatible and causes "tissue rejection", but I have done it before.

I have an installation on a small disk of Mint 19, I have all KINDS of custom and hard to install older packages on it, all rolled up into an installable USB, and as a test installed it (clean) on an old Dell Windows disk I had hanging around.

Everything worked without issue.

It was trying to install /home on the non-journalised Manjaro disk that gave me the issue. GParted showed it as EXT4, DISKS showed it as EXT4, but the installer insisted it was EXT2. If I told the installer it was EXT4, it would NOT let me deselect "Format", and when I told it the partition was EXT2, as it suggested, it couldn't mount it during installation.

I got the base system installed, and tried to edit the on-disk FSTAB to mount the partition at /home, but that didn't work either.

So I tried a 17.3 USB stick I had, and it did install just fine, recognizing the partition as EXT4 and allowed me to mount to /home, but in the process of the upgrades to 19 I lost all my hard-installed software.

So, I have a choice: I can install everything, all over again, from scratch (a lot of it was compiled on the system), or, someone can light a candle for me and tell me how to force the installer (Ubiquity) to accept that partition as EXT4.

Any suggestions will be welcomed with a serving of milk and cookies, or a four-finger shot of Rye. Your choice...

Edit: and, yes, I did try Mint 19 and Mint 19.1, clean unaltered USB images, and they, too recognized the partition as EXT2.
